I am writing this in partial response to another blog, but I didn't write it AS a response, because the person who brought this topic to mind did NOT say college was the only route to education. It would have been a horrible thread hijack for me to include this as my response. I spent two years in college, but didn't finish my degree because life intervened. I was 22 years old, and to receive financial aid for the following year, needed to obtain a statement from each of my parents that they w...

So, the last two days I've had to head into town bright and early, foregoing breakfast at home. This has meant I had to stop and get quick bites to eat wherever I could. Now that we're settled in, I'm trying to work on my weight again, that never ending battle that I'm slowly winning. So, I go to McDonald's. My "healthy" breakfast options are limited to a fruit and yogurt parfait and orange juice. Not bad choices, mind you, but it got me to thinking. Walk into any restaurant and look for th...

The WWW has been very revealing. Among other things, there's a proliferation of people from other countries that randomly spew ignorant garbage running down American government and American daily life. They base their hatred on select clips from the news media, exported US television shows, and friends that vacationed and/or participated in foreign exhange programs here. And their assumptions, from all I have seen, are largely wrong. Don't get me wrong; most Americans are equally ignora...

When my oldest daughter was a year old, we had an issue with the nursery of our church at the time. When we would take her in there, she would fuss. She wasn't used to being away from us, and needed to adjust to the nursery surroundings. The problem was, one nursery worker would come get us at the first sign of a whimper. Another instituted a "five minute" cry rule. Still another would bear through the entire church service to try to get her used to the nursery environment. We met with ...

Well, I have officially given up. We bought an '89 Ford Tempo with part of our tax money, and it's a decent car in most respects. Last week, however, the back left tire seized up on me and wouldn't rotate. A few calls told me it was the brakes. Well, I've done disk brakes before, so I figured drum brakes would be no biggie. WRONG! The left brakes, by the way, had basically exploded inside the drum. It was a mess, not pretty at all. Four trips to the parts store and following a marath...

T. Boone Pickens graced the Texas panhandle with a visit last week. For those who don't know, Pickens is an oil multimillionaire (or billionaire; I don't keep up with the Forbes list). His latest venture: buying water rights from anybody that will sell them. For the moment, Pickens intends to send the water to San Antonio, but it doesn't take a genius to realize he will sell to the highest bidder. That means that soon much of the Texas panhandle's water will be diverted to Nevada, Arizona,...

Here's the problem I see coming out of the inane congressional steroid investigations. See,certain senators have specified that they want ALL sports tested,at ALL levels. With that in mind, I present the following scenario: Little Johnny is an insulin dependent diabetic. He is a dextrously challenged six year old, but he has always had a passion for baseball, if not the skills to match. His ever vigilant mother keeps a ready supply of insulin and needles, knowing that Johnny's condition re...

I was saddened to hear of the Minnesota school shooting. I am even more saddened to know that some legislator will likely use it as a catalyst to try to further remove our freedoms. The thing is, the school shooting dispells a few myths that have been used to push or try to push legislation already in place. First, it dispells the primary myths of the gun control lobby that removing guns from the hands of the citizenry will eliminate gun violence. The student used the weapons belonging to ...

Yet another post on the Schiavo case. You'll just have to bear with these until the case is resolved, then I'll let off. I have seen a lot of respondents to the countless blogs question the level of knowledge of the article writer. Well, allow me to divulge. I worked for 5 1/2 years in group homes for developmentally disabled adults. Four of those years were as management. I have worked with individuals at or near Ms. Schiavo's level of functioning, including a 69 year old with downs syndr...

This from Yahoo's "Oddly Enough" news: Apparently, scientists at MIT have developed a new alarm clock, dubbed "clocky". This clock will sound its alarm, then, after the snooze button is pressed, will roll off the table and to another part of the room, forcing the sleepyhead to get out of bed just to FIND the durn thing! My advice: better make clocky with a titanium shell or make it awfully cheap, because there are gonna be a lotta broken "clockies" within a few days of their commercial relea...

a. You support the slow starvation of a nonverbal brain injured human being and yet you condemn capital punishment of convicted murderers b. You feel that the right to slowly starve said woman is a states rights issue, yet you feel that the federal government has not only a right, but a responsibility to dictate the terms of life in many other areas. c. You believe that someone should speak up for the voiceless victims of oppression in third world countries yet anyone who does so for voice...

Ok, to be technical, I looked up a few definitions of the word "express". I found the following relevant results: rapid transport of goods mail that is distributed by a rapid and efficient system send by rapid transport or special messenger service; "She expressed the letter to Florida" without unnecessary stops; "an express train"; "an express shipment" Bearing that in mind, I took two rims in last week to WalMart's Tire and Lube EXPRESS to have new tires put on them for my vehicle, ...

Ward Churchill makes me sick, the more I hear him. Not because of what he said about the 9/11 victims of the twin towers being "little Eichmanns". As appalling as that statement is to me, it is free speech, it is his opinion, and he has a right to it. Our commitment to the first amendment is only proven when we are willing to extend it to those with whom we disagree. No, what appalls me about Churchill is his hypocrisy. He has used every public platform he can to decry the millions who hav...

Well, now that we have a computer again (internet hookup scheduled for next Thursday), I put myself to writing this morning. I have quite a few "projects" running through my head, but chose to focus on the one in which I have the greatest amount of experience and thus, has the greatest chance for faster publication: homeschooling (I have worked as a homeschool lobbyist and paid public speaker for 8 years, and have served as the head of a local group of 175 homeschool families as well as board me...
