I have not seen the movie, but was listening to Glen Beck this morning (the best of) while doing my Paul Bunyon imitation. He was interviewing Ben Stein. Once upon a time there were no such things as schools and teachers. Mankind somehow managed to educate and raise children without them and today we are more educated and our population has grown by leaps and bounds. Considering this country was created on the premise of doing the right thing, I have to say ethics and values also survived the test of time. So for us to talk as if somehow we should now only worry about me/I/myself and my own shows how little we have retained from the education and skills learned thru out mankind history that has allowed us to continue to exist and expand our existence. Keep this up and there will be no need for another meteor, global warming, or some kind of planet eating creature from space to wipe mankind from existence.
And students ARE going to get some of my values, because I refuse to let them treat each other like crap. The world outside my classroom might think that's okay, but I don't. I expect that there will no name calling, no teasing, etc. Unfortunately, that expectation goes unyielded at times, and there are consequences for children choosing not to follow that rule. They are required to apologize (after a time...what good does it do to ask a kid to apologize in the heat of anger) and we discuss a better solution than the offense. Usually the child loses a privilege, too.
