My oldest daughter is 9 years old, and, for those who don't know, we homeschool our children. She has a running assignment to report on a news story every week from the newspaper. She has, typical for her age, been careless in the completion of these assignments, and so she knows there will penaties if the article isn't turned in on time. Saturday, I read her latest report. Now, my daughter has an advanced vocabulary, but it was quickly clear to me from reading the piece that the writing w...

I am quickly determining that the British Empire is going to Hell in a handcart. As I detailed last week, there has been a movement afoot to sell bogus Lordships in England. Now it has gotten ever so much worse. A Buckingham Palace worker absconded with a "spare" pudding from the stockpile the Queen uses to give as gifts to palace workers (not having worked there long enough, he did not receive one of his own) and "pudding" it up for auction on eBay. He was sacked, as his actions were felt to...

So, I'm at the grocery store the other night, and I run into one of our locals, a very intelligent man, although one whose intelligence is mitigated by the fact that he thinks he's the most intelligent man in town and doesn't have time to entertain opposing viewpoints (the same one cited in my "What Qualifies as 'Research' Nowadays" article). He asks me if I'm going to the school board meeting tonight. My reply was simply that, as a homeschooler, I expected minimal oversight from the state an...

Well, I had high hopes for this Christmas season; it's kinda going south here in the last week and a half before Christmas. I think this year it has to do with seeing so many people prepare for family and friends for the holidays and not having a "family" per se. We have places to go, don't get me wrong, but in all of those places, we will feel like outsiders looking in and not like part of the family. To top it all off, we now live so close to my "hometown" that I can taste it, for the fi...

According to Yahoo's "Oddly enough" news, a Mexican man killed his lover in a drunken drugged fight then cooked him in a tomato and onion sauce and ate him over three days The news story is below: MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican man killed his lover in a drunken, drugged fight then cooked the man's body in tomato and onion sauce and ate it over three days.   Police found Gumaro de Dios Arias grilling rotting human flesh for his breakfast, including part of a heart, when ...

John Steinbeck's hometown of Salinas, California, is closing its three libraries to save $3 million to make up an $8 million shortfall. In what I would deem one of the saddest indicators of the declining literacy of our society, this community of 155,000 has deemed libraries to not be worth the money. Now, I might not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but it seems reasonable to me for them to eliminate 2 of the 3 branches to reduce their expenditures and find other areas to cut. I truly hope...

OK, sorry for the mass blogging today, just in "one of those" moods, and of course my time is limited. But this should be the last article for the day for me: I have an addiction to food. No, it's not funny, no it's not petty, and no it's not something for which I am particularly inclined to sit in a roomful of blubbering crybabies fueling myself in self pity to go into "recovery" (I have nothing against 12 step programs FOR SOME PEOPLE). When I first reached a point of self awareness a...

I must tell you about my next door neighbor. He is an incredibly generous individual, who will help out anyone in a heartbeat. He has raised up his children, his grandchildren, and now is pretty much the primary caregiver for his great grandchildren. Unfortunately, his doctors recently spotted a blockage in his arteries. Fortunately, further tests showed that it wasn't serious and can probably be treated with medication. What got me, though, was last weekend when we were sitting around at th...

Well, I don't consider myself to be an avid fan of The Daily Show, but I do consider some of their observations to be astute, and I picked up a copy of "America (the Book)", expecting more of the Michael Moore brand of "satire" (read: belittling at least half of the American population to browbeat them into thinking his way), and I was pleasantly surprised. "America (the Book)" is pleasantly double edged in its satire, as readily taking Clinton to task for his presidency as it does our curr...

Things that make you go hmmm... Our small Texas town, is going to receive a surveillance camera that can detect facial features up to five miles away. Ostensibly to assist EMT and firefighting personnel, the suggestion of its use to apprehend miscreants has already been broached. We are dangerously teetering on the precipice of becoming a totalitarian society, and I can't help but think that use of surveillance cameras such as this in a community with 500 citizens will eventually be used for ...

Yahoo's "Oddly enough" section has picked up on an offer of a "Lordship" for the Holidays in the article below. Well, I can't think of a batter gift for that special someone. Wouldn't mind a lordship myself. But, as I'm bent on the papacy, I'm thinking that whole church/state thing might come into play. Become a Lord for 29.99 Mon Dec 13,10:16 AM ET   Oddly Enough - Reuters LONDON (Reuters) - The British aristocracy has long been an exclusive c...

According to Yahoo! news, Kobe Bryant, unsatisfied with Shaq's leaving him without enough targets of his selfish idiocy, has turned his guns on Karl Malone, for allegedly making a pass at his wife. Now, regardless of whether Bryant's accusation is true or not, this article struck me as borderline hilarious. Regardless of what did or did not happen in regards to consent, Kobe DID "have sexual relations with that woman" who accused him of rape. Now, he's fuming at a teammate for daring to LOOK ...

OK, the original title of this was going to also cite a penchant for penguin lust and I am minorly annoyed that it just didn't fit...lol (I DO want to see what kind of mad google referrals kick off this post though). A well raised point on another blog mentioned the self destructive tendency of many homosexuals to announce their gayness within minutes of meeting a person. They pretty much guarantee a response, and will ignore 1000 well wishers to brand the one person who expresses revulsion a...

I always chuckle when I get the same stupid spam emails repeated with the same pretense; that there are folks out there with millions of dollars waiting to just hand it over to any one of the 200 they put on the mass email list for that particular email. It adds an extra degree of hilarity for me, though, when they appeal to me as a Christian. Following is the text of my latest "offer". I thought I'd put it out there for your collective amusement.   Dear Beloved in Christ, Compl...
