The journey from there to here
or, "when is a hermaphrodite NOT a hermaphrodite?"
Published on May 7, 2005 By Gideon MacLeish In Current Events

Another blogger's thread was hijacked by a reader taking offense to the use of the word "hermaphrodite". Personally, I'm among the growing number of Americans who are becoming pissed by the "PC police" changing terms that were once acceptable just so they can brand the rest of us as being bigots because we didn't get the latest copy of "liberals weekly". To whit, I am reserving my right to continue to use the following terms:

  • hermaphrodites
  • retards
  • freaks
  • Indians
  • generic references to "mankind" with the gender specific pronoun "he"
  • idiots
  • morons
  • transsexuals
  • queers
  • midgets
  • dwarfs
  • handicapped
  • perverts
  • pollacks
  • airheads
  • more as I think of them

What about you, JU? Please feel free to list all the non-PC terms you reserve the right to retain.

Political correctness has reached an insane level in American society. I mean, what's wrong with calling a blind or deaf person 'handicapped'? Isn't that what they are? It's not being disrespectful or making fun of them.

Oriental. The next time I hear someone say "Oriental" is for rugs and furniture, I'm going to beat the living shit out of them. Maybe they should learn what the hell an adjective is.

blind - not sight challenged, blind is blind
deaf - not hearing impaired, hey he's deaf!
dumb/mute - not silent
stupid - not learning disabled, stupid is stupid ok?
crippled - not physically challeged
short - not vertically challenged. a dwarf is a dwarf dammit
redneck - not socially challenged

Another thing that bothers me is when some people call every single person that lives in Africa an African-American. THEY CAN'T BE AFRICAN-AMERICAN IF THEY LIVE IN UGANDA!

Can you tell that some things bother me?

yeah, the Hermaphrodite debate entertained me also. I mean, it's not like the word doesn't have meaning. A meaning that describes who fits and who doesn't fit the term. It isn't a label, an insult or a personal shot, it's a fact.

A person born with neither male or female sex organs, or a person born with any or all of both, is in fact a Hermaphrodite.

It's ironic. At a time when we are supposed to recognize and honor anyone and everyone's sexual orientations, some liberal comes out and says you shouldn't recognize Hermaphrodites by using the very term that describes what they are.

I have one... the stigma attached to a lot of words in the old psychological lexicon... when did CRAZY and PSYCHO get to be inappropriate terms.

TheFazz: You know what I've always wondered, and your query reminded me of it. Thinking about another country that has a notably significant Black population(yes, I still use the word "black"), I wonder what the PC term for someone from that race is in Great Britain.
on May 07, 2005
I use the word 'black', and 'Indian'. I have used the 'n' word, usually in the Dave Chappelle school of 'my niggah'. I don't believe we have the right to say "That's our word". A word is a word, if you use it, you can't fault anyone else for using it.

Bitch, whore, bastard, pervert, nutcase... I thought it would be easier to think of a list of terms I HAVEN'T said, but I can't think of any. I dunno, I'd say if there is an un-PC term out there I've used it more than once, either in seriousness or satire or a mixture of the two.

I posted an article along these lines (link here) when I first joined this site. Too bad it's not an original from me, but it makes the point nonetheless.

I'd say that would be a "Black Bloke" ;~D

tell me about it. Uhhhhh...African...Ameri...Can...Amer...Canadian. Oh, hell. Can I just say black?

Besides, since mankind originated in the Great Rift Valley, in East Africa, everyone's African-(insert country of current residence here). (Insert generic Dave Chappellian comment that I'm probably too afraid to type on account of my light skin here)

Is anyone actually attempting to stop you using labels such as these, Gideon? Surely you HAVE the right to use these terms. And other people have the right to be offended by your use of them.

You're obviously quite comfortable referring to people as 'cripples, 'morons' or 'Indians', regardless of their feelings on the matter. However, when it comes to a topic that affects YOU, instead you issue a plea for understanding and sensitivity - see your blog thread, 'Just put the FORK down'. Interesting.

Actually, yes, we face punishment for using them every day. Actually, wasn't there a blog recently about a guy who should have expected to be fired for using the word "beaner"?

Hmm...

'My British Hubby and I talked about this long ago. They make no distinction. Blacks there simply call themselves Englishmen, as do all other Englishmen, regardless of race.'
Absolute nonsense. This must be some other England than the one I know!

"As far as homosexuals go, I'm rather fond of 'turd-burglar' and you couldnt convince me to retire that phrase for anything in the world."

You just think you heard me suggest "fudge packer", but you really didn't. That wouldn't be PC.
