The journey from there to here
or, "when is a hermaphrodite NOT a hermaphrodite?"
Published on May 7, 2005 By Gideon MacLeish In Current Events

Another blogger's thread was hijacked by a reader taking offense to the use of the word "hermaphrodite". Personally, I'm among the growing number of Americans who are becoming pissed by the "PC police" changing terms that were once acceptable just so they can brand the rest of us as being bigots because we didn't get the latest copy of "liberals weekly". To whit, I am reserving my right to continue to use the following terms:

  • hermaphrodites
  • retards
  • freaks
  • Indians
  • generic references to "mankind" with the gender specific pronoun "he"
  • idiots
  • morons
  • transsexuals
  • queers
  • midgets
  • dwarfs
  • handicapped
  • perverts
  • pollacks
  • airheads
  • more as I think of them

What about you, JU? Please feel free to list all the non-PC terms you reserve the right to retain.

I knew a Welshman once. I called him an Englishman one time by mistake. I woke up in the Hospital 3 days later!

This English~Irish~Welsh~Scot~American resents that and is glad his (kind of) countryman put you in your place!! ;~D

The English part for daring to upgrade him? Or the Welsh part for downgrading him?

PHDs can be stupid and often are.

Definately agree with you there. Met more than a couple.

And yes,in fact, people try to stop the use of these terms. This whole thing started when someone went on another person's thread taking offense to the use of the word "hermaphrodite" as opposed to "intersexed". The point of this article is that PC has gone off the deep end, and I'm sure pretty much everyone's in agreement on this.'

Point taken Gideon. Attempting to limit use of the language is surely unhealthy, as George Orwell attempted to illustrate in '1984'. But surely there's a difference between 'trying to stop' and 'attempting to dissuade'? eg. While I wouldn't support legislation against you using any of the words listed, don't I have a right to tell you that I find them offensive, and why?

wtf is wrong with the word hermaphrodite? Sure, maybe there's no harm in trying to make people say "intersexed", but there was no harm in the word hermaphrodite to begin with.

Such attitudes make people wary of calling somthing by its true name; which often leaves us with "freedom fighters" instead of "terrorists", and worse...

I missed that comment, which is just as good. I have never heard of the term intersexed.  Sounds like something you do to a baby chick when culling the males from the females!

Absolutely. As I have the right to keep using them (although, in all honesty I wouldn't use them in regular usage if I knew they truly pissed someone off who wasn't oversensitive).

I mentioned my sis-in-law in an earlier blog. She goes off the deep end enytime someone uses the word "man" for "mankind" or male pronouns identifying a nonspecific person. As much as my usage of those terms offends her, her "watchdogging" my language offends me.
