The journey from there to here

Every year, sportswriters look for controversy. Since the inception of the much hated Bowl Champiohsip Series, much of it in the late season has centered around worthy teams that were snubbed from their "rightful" place among the BCS elite. And sometimes the writers are right. But sometimes it becomes a matter of Much Ado About Nothing.

This year, the latter was true of the vaunted Oregon Ducks, who viewed their bowl matchup with Oklahoma as not worthy of their time and attention. Perhaps they deemed it so unworthy that they didn't bother to review tape or to (ahem!) practice against the Sooners, who for the last few weeks of their season veered dangerously close to the precipice of avoiding bowl consideration altogether. The Sooners won the matchup, albeit narrowly, against the highly favored waterfowl with a final score of 17-14.

Life will go on and this game will go on to be a mere footnote in the history of college sports. OU fans will disregard it altogether as it is a painful reminder of a season with much promise where so much went wrong. But it serves as a glaring reminder that, despite the fact that the BCS is run by an impersonal computer, human prognosticators can occasionally be just as wrong.

First let me start off saying I'm no fan of the Oregon Ducks.

Despite losing to what to many consider a subpar Oklahoma team, I still think they were snubbed by the BCS. It shouldn't matter if they won or lost their bowl game.

The BCS picks 8 teams. 6 champions from the 6 major conferences plus 2 at-large teams. The 2 at-large teams this year are Ohio State and Notre Dame. First let's look at Ohio State. They're 9-2, with their 2 losses coming to #2 Texas and #3 Penn State, both champions of their respective conferences. I have no problem with them as a at-large team.

Notre Dame is also 9-2, with one of their losses coming to USC, who are the top ranked team and are the 2-time defending National Champs. But their other loss was to Michigan State, a team that finish 5-6. For that reason Notre Dame should NOT be in a BCS game.

Meanwhile Oregon finished 10-1, with their only loss being to USC. They also beat 4 teams that went to bowl games, while Notre Dame only beat 3. The only reason Notre Dame got picked over Oregon is because they're Notre Dame. They are a known name, which will bring bigger ratings. Part of the hypocrisy by the BCS.

Now let's go to Oregon losing their bowl game to Oklahoma. It's not a terrible loss. In all my bowl picks I took Oklahoma over Oregon, and here's why. Oregon, no matter what the coaches or players says, weren't ready to play. There was going to be a natural letdown after playing their hearts out all season only to be felt you were snubbed.

Plus their quarterback Kellen Clemens was out for the season. You take out any starting quarterback from the 8 BCS teams and would you pick them to win?

Oklahoma isn't as bad as their record. Their 4 losses were to all bowl teams and they beat 3 bowl teams.Starting the season they were very young and inexperienced team. But like any like any other very young, talented team they improved each week, which is why they won 6 out of their last 7 games including their bowl win. Their only loss in that span came to Texas Tech which scored a last minute disputed touchdown.

Then there was Adrian Peterson's health. The star running back was as healthy as he's been all year. He's a workhorse who makes any team better with defenses having to concentrate on him. So in my opinion losing to the Sooners isn't anything to be ashamed of.

When it comes to the BCS lots of people joke they should eliminate the 'C' since it's all BS. If anything they should eliminate the 'S' since it's not a Bowl Championship SERIES, it's just a Bowl Championship.

Both impersonal computers and human prognosticators are going to be wrong occasionally. You're never going to stop people from complaining about a different team every year. Well not until teams settle things on the field in a playoff system. I, for one, can't wait until that happens.
