The journey from there to here

I have lately been inundated with popunders from the sites I surf. At first, I thought it had to do entirely eith the sites I surfed via blogexplosion and blogclicker (as I run three separate windows when I surf).

But as I went across another JU blogger's site, it became clear: SOME of those popups, at least, are coming from JU blogsites (before you ask, I don't have the option of downloading software to kill these pesky mosquitos...it's a library computer, 'member?).

I realize that there are some among us who have the quixotic dream of making vast fortunes off of surfing the internet; frankly, I tend to be among them from time to time. And I even ran popunders on my sister site for a brief period of time.

But eventually I realized that popunders are the bane of a websurfer's experience, and in some cases, can potentially cause a surfer to abandon your blog altogether; thus negating any positive benefits you may have gained from the popunders.

So, please, give it some serious consideration...and give my poor mouse a rest from these annoyances!

If I had to guess, I'd say your library computer has a bit of spyware at work. I've never had a popup, or popunder, or anything else at JU. Most spyware sits silently and opens windows as you browse, making you think you are getting the popups from the site in question. maybe you could post an example?

It's possible, I dunno...I may try to post an example when one comes up again. But I also know of a site that offers link exchanges for carrying their popunders...I had it on my sister site for a time.

I haven't had a popunder at JU I think either Gid, but I have experienced the phenomenon at public computers a lot.

Granted Popups and unders are annoying.

Gid, I second the notion that the library computer has been infected with some spyware/adware.

You might make a suggestion to the library folks that they run Spybot Search and Destroy or Adaware on the system. Something that will find and destroy that scummy software.

I have yet to hit a blog here at JoeUser that has included any pop-ups or pop-unders, but then again I am pretty selective in which blogs I read.

I'd add that if you use Webster or another dictionary site while you blog, many of them have popups. I usually keep several tabs open, so it took me a while to figure out that websters had popups. Webster.com always used to drop those awful tickle popunders until I blocked them.

BakerStreet and a few of the others are on the money I do believe. A lot of those popups and popunders appear they are coming from the site you visit or leave but really they are coming from the spyware. There are sites still using these but not a lot. If you are getting them a lot with BE the odds are against it being the site because they would be reported and removed since your not supposed to use them at BE.

Definetly would agree with the spyware crowd, see if the librains can run spybot and ad-aware to remove them. The Spyware gets installed on the computer WITHOUT the user's permission, and they use hijacks and redirects to popup and popunder the advertisements making surfing a hassle. All the time I've been using Joe User I haven't had a single pop-up, pop-under, or any pop period. At home I'd run them once a week or so, the library computers, who knows if they were ever ran on them.

Popups are evil. Like Walmart, or Gilbert Godfried..........

Let me know a site that you are seeing this from.  They shouldn't be able to do something like that since we strip code.

Yea, I was going to say Gideon, that while I have a blocker, I make sure it gives me a riccochet and the cursor X when one tries, and I have never seen that at JU.

I am beginning to think these guys are right, that it may be spyware on the public computer. It came up twice when I went onto a certain site (if you could post your email addy in here again, I'll mention the site in question; for obvious reasons I don't want to do it publicly), but I haven't seen it recur in awhile.

You should be able to see it in my profile when you click on my name (I leave it public).  I don't typically put it on the forums because then it's an easy target for web crawlers, and I don't need anymore SPAM
