The journey from there to here

When I was in high school, INXS was a favorite band of mine. So much so that my first ever debit card PIN was the four numbers that corresponded with the letters of the band's name. But as I aged, so did my musical tastes. No longer were formulaic groups like INXS and (gag!) the Hooters adequate for the tastes of a person seeking substance in the musical style and the lyrical content of his favorite bands. But, you can't erase some of those things in your past, and I still have fond memories of most of the band's hits. So, when they announced they would be choosing the new lead singer via a reality show format, I took notice.

So far, it's been pretty interesting. I don't think I would be alone in having a hard time transitioning to a female lead singer, but listening to the first week's selections did cause me to realize that these folks definitely chose some talent for the show. A few thoughts on individual contestants, though: The young man who tackled CCR's "Fortunate Son" would be my first choice for a Stones or CCR cover band, but not INXS. His "style" doesn't seem to fit. And the young lady who did a brilliantly beautiful rendition of the Eagles' "Take it Easy" might well be the next Shania Twain, but, it's my hope, not the singer to perform THIS role. But, I suppose the band is in no small way looking for a change.

I like the idea of putting it in a reality show format. INXS is a well established band, and no singer could ever replace Michael Hutchence. By making their selection for a lead singer a very public undertaking, they might well draw in old fans to at least give their new album a hard look.

I know THIS "Old fan" will be looking.

I am really interested in this one too. I like Jordis (small girl, lots of hair in dreads)as an early leader. Marty has some serious chops too. J.D. had a spastic first show but came out with a great, personally done arraingment of California Dreamin in the second. Daphna draws me in too. I am really torn I like the sound of almost all of them.

I too am an INXS fan. I hope as the season progresses that we get a taste of what is to come out of the band. I don't think trying to replace Micheal Hutchence is going to be the outcome. I am sure they will cover the old stuff but with a new front man or woman I am sure there has to be some sort of change in direction.

The website has some of this weeks performances up for viewing Link. You need the lastest Media Player to view it though. There is a link on the video site though.

I heard about this.  But I was never an INXS fan (dont hate them, just could care less about them).  Have fun with that show.  It does sound more interesting than Survivor - Tora Bora.

ehhhhhh I was a little sick to my stomach just seeing the print ads for this one...i was, once upon a time, a decently bit INXS fan (which went away about the time a little band called Nirvana came out) -- but it seems really crass to hold a constest to replace a guy who committed suicide just to sing a bunch of cheesy songs like "New Sensation." I wouldn't have the slightest interest in buying a "new" INXS album at all...

and if they ever did that for Nirvana, I'd rise up and slay them...

Cheers.

I've been watching it myself. I liked that they found a way to put INXS' music into the show by having the people sing a greatest hit. Then, that's how the band decides who stays on and who doesn't. The woman who sang "Never Tear Us Apart" last night rocked. I really enjoyed her performance.

I'm not likely to buy the new CD, although it's good to see the band is not going to pick some lackluster person just because.
Edited to add: Myrrander, I agree wholeheartedly with Nirvana. I would help you. No one messes with Nirvana!

I'm watching this one, too...I think the three strongest performers are Jordis, the blonde gal who wore braids on the show the other night, and the tall, shaggy haired guy with the 5 o'clock shadow...sorry, haven't memorized all the names yet. lol

I like watching the show too. I think it's a good marketing move to hold auditions for a new singer on national television. I agree that there is no singer that could replace Michael Hutchence and they shouldn't try to, instead find a different singer with his or her own style. Not a Michael Hutchence sound alike. Which is why you shouldn't dismiss anyone just yet until they do sing a INXS song so you can see what they bring to it. Who knows the 'CCR' guy or the 'Eagles' woman might surprise you.

No way would they ever do that with Nirvana. Kurt Cobain WAS Nirvana. I think the only time a different singer will front Nirvana is when Nirvana performs when they're inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No way can you ever replace a singer who is for the most part THE band. To a lesser degree you have the Doors. I thought they always sounded absolutely horrible anytime someone tried to take Jim Morrison's role. Now saying that I think there are some bands that could lose their lead singers and replace the lead singers and strive. Just as long as they don't call themselves the original name of the band. If they change the band name then they could have a successful run, for example you have Chris Cornell fronting Rage Against The Machine but they call themselves Audioslave and in another example you have Scott Weiland basically fronting Guns-N-Roses but they call themselves Velvet Revolver. Both those bands come nowhere near there original stuff but they are striving. Now if we can just get Zack DeLaRocha and Axel Rose to front Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots respectively under different band names. But I got a feeling that's what you're gonna hear in some bars in hell.
