The journey from there to here
Published on May 13, 2005 By Gideon MacLeish In Home & Family

When I went to the post office yesterday, I pulled out a letter that was hand printed and had no return address. Because many of my customers commonly send tips this way, I thought nothing of it. I opened it and out slid a pink piece of stationary with a butterfly on it. My appreciation for it ended with the reading of the first sentence.

It was hate mail.

I will decline to share the text with you, as it bears no relevance to the topic of this discussion and, frankly, it still stings. But I will say that, as opinionated as I am, I have never been described as a hateful person. I can have an intense debate and walk away from it with respect for my opponent. But this person, although they were anonymous, obviously didn't know me personally because they didn't know my first name. They made their judgements solely off of having seen me (ironically, this is a community where virtually EVERYONE is a Christian...it's a safe bet this person was).

The real kicker came as I realized later that the actual letter was written by a CHILD. It obviously didn't express the child's viewpoint, as the person had to know my PO Box number and my last name at least. So what this meant was that, not only was the parent too chicken to write the letter themselves (probably because this town is small enough I could find out who wrote it easily enough), but that they are coaching their children in hate and passing the baton of bigotry off to another generation.

That last part is what really disgusts me.

The one thing I WILL share from the letter is that I was informed that I would have to cut my hair if I wanted to live in this town.

i was gonna use that as a jumpoff point for a joke but as i began typing it, i realized there's nothing at all funny about this. sorry you're on the receiving end of such idiocy.

Obviously, discrimination is not just by the color of your skin. Idiocy is correct!

Sad. Truly sad Gid.

Cut your hair you hippie!!!

I wouldn't let someone else's stupidity bother me too much.

The problem is this is a community where some residents openly brag about taking children from a family where the parents didn't have running water in the household...And there are a number here who HATE us because we homeschool (they expected the addition of our children to their school system to save it from its fiscal incompetence).

Jeez, this just keeps getting better and better man. What's their problem with the hair? And the homeschooling? I thought texas was all about having the right to raise your kids how you see fit.

Sounds more like small town Utah to me Gid.

Don't be so sure that letter was written by a child. I remember an episode of the Simpsons where Principle Skinner thought that Bart was writing his own excuse notes, until he saw Homer sign something in the same "handwriting." I wouldn't be surprised if the person who wrote that note just isn't that into the whole "reading and writing" thing.

awful gid, one would think that the whole "hair issue" would have upped and died long ago.

Actually, it isn't just the handwriting. The grammar, spelling and syntax errors are atrocious in a way that even a SEMI literate adult just couldn't fabricate. If you saw the note, you'd definitely agree.

If it was just the handwriting I would say that it probably was a child being coached, but when I read the "child" bit I immediately thought of this story. How much time have you spent on the internet and you don't believe that adults can have horrible grammar and spelling?

Have you every really looked at one of the C.O.L.'s articles / replies where he hasn't run it through the spelling and grammatical checker?

There are many people out there that are less than literate and do a very poor job communicating either via written or spoken word.

Assuming it was a child may be giving someone far too much credit. Sad but true in this nation of ours.

This makes me really sad, Gideon. I wish I could say that I'm shocked by it, but I'm not. I really hate that you and your family are having to deal with this crap.
on May 14, 2005
Well, whether the writer was a child or not, you can be sure the original source was an idiot.

does the Col write sentences like "went you live in are town" (for "when you live in our town)?

You guys will just have to trust me when I say the way it was written is a way that NO semiliterate adult could produce (including an entirely untranslateable closing sentence).

If I were you, I would be showing it off to my friends as proof that my enemies were certifiably stupid.
