The journey from there to here
Published on April 27, 2005 By Gideon MacLeish In Current Events

On my sister blog site, I received criticism for encouraging readers to click ads (not fraudulently, mind you, I encouraged them to read what was there!). Not surprisingly, it was used, not as constructive criticism on MY site, but as fodder for a blogger on another site who apparently was incapable of manufacturing a decent blog on her own (I suppose I could consider my contribution a form of charity, but I digress).

I won't steal the thunder from my sister site and reveal the response article; I will encourage you to check that for yourselves. I will, however, address this wannabe's most humour line, the one where she effectively tells me to "get a job".

Everybody has a skill, something that they do well. My skill happens to be writing. Just as the baker bakes and the butcher butches, I write. I have written for recreation since I was old enough to wield the old number two rather than those converted lincoln logs they gave us in kidnergarten.

I have tried to apply myself to other areas, but with mixed success. I like printing, but I sucked at it, likewise inventory control. I enjoyed working as a plastics injection mould operator, but there are limited options to that end in the Texas Panhandle. I really enjoyed working with developmentally disabled adults, but my opinionated nature and regard for the individual made me a pariah in this field where individuals are an exploitable commodity. I hated mining, and sucked at it anyway, I didn't mind plumbing, but I sucked there. I did well at selling used books, but lacked the capital to make it a fulltime endeavour.

And so, after years of whoring myself out for the best dollar I could obtain, I decided to pursue my first love with a more zealous approach. I have written more in the past several months, as I have been given a gift of inestimable worth, the gift of time. I am working on several projects that may eventually see some remuneration.

So, ms. "get a job"; I'm actually working pretty hard at the moment. Perhaps it is you, whose "limited time" doesn't allow a click on my ad links, but DOES allow you to copy/paste the article and write your rant, who needs to rethink your priorities.
