Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I can't remember who said that (although I could probably google it readily), but it's a generally accepted maxim as regards politics, and one that has been proven more often than disproven.
It is also a maxim that is largely disregarded by the American left in their quest to create a utopia. Somehow they feel that an individual, once bestowed with the mantle of being part of a "government" is immediately immunized from the effects of their own vindictive natures and selfish desires. They wrongly believe that these individuals will see in their role as "the government" the responsibility to protect and serve, the motto that's plastered on virtually every police car in the country.
I'm here to tell you that it just isn't so.
The government, you see, is made up of PEOPLE. And people primarily serve their own interests, despite outward declarations of altruism and a greater interest in humanity. That is neither right or wrong, it is basic Darwinism in a nutshell; these individuals work to ensure their own survival, be it political or otherwise. To ensure their own survival, they support their fellow "governmentarians" in enacting legislation that, while possibly useful and potentially even beneficial for their region, do not work to serve other parts of the country. I could cite examples in this area of environmental laws, of education laws, of laws in just about every area of legislation.
Only by removing absolute power from the government can we begin to know the freedoms our forefathers envisioned. I could readily cite a list of enough laws and local ordinances that NEED to be abolished to fill a book. And yet these laws remain as deterrents to individual liberty.
An individual stated on another article of mine that life without liberty is death. And he was, and is, 100% accurate in that statement. So let's take back a little liberty, shall we?
