The journey from there to here

By now, everyone's heard the story: Richard Hatch has been charged with tax evasion for failing to report his $1.01 million earnings from the first "Survivor" season, as well as a series of radio shows.

Well, there's a word for Mr. Hatch's actions, and that is STUPID.

While the average joe naturally omits the $500 or so they made over the year mowing lawns and the $1500 they made having garage sales (bolstered by the accidental sale of junior's '53 Mantle for $200, for which junior is currently not speaking with them), the "average joe" is not the sole winner on a game show with several million viewers. Put simply, when you receive $1 million in a very public place, better give old uncle shylock....err, Sam (no antisemitic reference intended here; simply a literary character to make an analogy) his pound of flesh, or you can rest assured, he'll come looking for it.

If Mr. Hatch was a tax protestor, I would support him fully. But tax protestors usually live the lives of luddites in the backcountry of Montana; they don't regularly appear on every talk show that will have them. So I doubt that's his angle. I remain convinced of my original thesis here.

yea, you got to wonder what he was thinking!  I would love to not report some of my income from my side business, but if it is over $500 per client, I know the IRS is going to get a 1099, so I dont even try!
