The journey from there to here

A couple of months ago, I built a computer on speculation, figuring to use it to make a couple of needed extra bucks. This was before the contract jobs were coming at a steady pace, when I thought we might need the extra scratch. It's a solid computer, Athlon 4400+ processor, 1GB RAM (that's what came with the package; I will upgrade later), 2-160GB Seagate SATA hard drives, and a DVD burner with lightscribe. I put it all together for $300 ($350 before rebates, but those are in now, so I can mark down the post-rebate price).

I was pleased to discover that the extra money wouldn't be necessary, and so I was able to hold onto the machine (although I'm looking at selling my old one; we are computer-rich at the moment). I was initially going to make it an XP machine, and loaded, but did not activate the O/S.

This past week, I decided that I wanted to hold onto my XP key, and load the machine with Vista Ultimate (being a student, I get it for next to nothing). I've been working with Vista for awhile and am familiar with the ins and outs, and besides, this is a machine that can more than handle it. So I gave in to the power of the dark side and loaded it with Vista (whose number one best feature is...CHESS!)

I was pleased to see an experience score of 3.0. Only the (onboard) graphics is dogging the score; otherwise it would be a 4.5. I'm thinking of pulling my video card from my Optiplex GX260 (the onboard still works, so it would be cool) to see what the experience score is with a *new* video card.

Now, this only gives me something to play with until my HH cd gets here (I have a partition set aside and ready for it when it comes), but the computer is running smoothly most of the time (I do need to up the memory). I just...feel so dirty right now...

...But I have my chess game!

Good for you.

Way to go, Gid ..welcome to the darkside

Interested to hear your views on Hardy Heron once you've loaded that one up, too...

I gave in to the DARK SIDE!

Now that didn't hurt one little bit, did it! Besides, it ain't so dark once you get inside properly... and I'm sure the lighting will get even better with a decent graphics card in there.

Best reason I have seen yet to upgrade - Chess!

Yeah.

Best quote on Vista I have heard yet is that those who don't appreciate it aren't technically savvy enough to understand it. That's actually my biggest beef; an O/S wasn't meant to be for techies, but for average end users.

The chief problem with computers running Vista right now is too many of them are running with the bare minimum specs. That's never advisable.

I've been making that point for ages now about underpowered PC running Vista, there's far too many of them... not the PC's fault though, but rather the people who think they can skimp (be tight arsed on cash) and run it on next to near bare bones systems.

Never ceases to amaze me, with all the Vista requirement info out there, just how many twerps who'll still totally can it after trying to run it with 512mb of RAM... not to mention the below par CPU that groaned like buggery when a few background services kicked in under XP.

All I gotta say to that is, bloody idiots for buying it in the first place... meaning that it was a total waste of money if they weren't prepared to run it on something half-way decent. Guess I don't suffer fools gladly... and I've come across a few too many just lately to feel even slightly sympathetic...

One guy in particular, went into a screaming tirade against Vista Ultimate because it cost him AU$600 + and it wouldn't run on his machine... when I found out he had installed on a PC with just 256mb of RAM and a 1.6ghz CPU, I severely wanted to slap him around the jowls with a kipper 'til his nose bled.

OK, now I've had a vent I don't feel so depressed, so I'll take my meds and go to bed.

BTW, today I upgraded from my Nvidia 8600GT to a 8800GT. The 8600GT was an OK GPU for most purposes, but I was having a few paint/repaint issues while editing video in XP as well as Vista so took the plunge and forked over some 'getting harder to come-bys'

Technically, my old desktop is Vista capable, but with the 1.8Ghz CPU, I'll stick with XP, as it blazes on XP (2 GB RAM, 256MB video card). Why fix what ain't broke? (except in the case of this new machine, where I wanted to keep my XP Pro key!)

I tell people flat out that I wouldn't recommend less than 2GB RAM for Vista (even though I am, for a moment, running with half that), or less than 1GB for XP, because RAM is usually the first bottleneck a PC experiences.

I doubt I will ever love Vista (I don't LOVE XP, for that matter!), but for the foreseeable future, I will need a Windows workstation (my eventual goal is to build a Linux network with a single Windows client for those apps that need it...I'll let you know how that develops).

Just say yes to the darkside!

Take a trip back to 98 or 3x for a while and you may not 'love' XP...but you'll definitely appreciate it more....

Jafo refrained from EVEN MENTIONING WinME .....for obvious reasons....

Damn....just did.....

I don't love 'em either... but I use what works for me, and dual booting Vista & XP does the job just fine. I am still to complete the box for Ubuntu HH... couldn't afford to build another while upgrading my main machine to how I want it, but it's getting there with the parts that get traded down from my main PC. It still needs a few items but it's almost there... and I'll probably end up dual booting XP Home and Ubuntu HH on it when it's done.

Oh, and the 8800GT resolved my paint/repaint issue when video editing, so with the 4gb of DDR2 800 RAM and 3.2ghz AMD Athlon x2 6400, I'm happy with my main setup and can focus more on the second box, which hopefully will be complete over the couple of weeks or so.

Jafo,

One of the reasons I am anticipating moving up the tech support chain (I will be management at my next job) is so that I don't have to take those steenkeeng Win 9x or ME calls!

Oh! So you've moved up the IT pecking order from the little old ladies who call you up to fix their abacus'

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I had a little old lady wanting me to fix hers... apparently it fell apart when she dropped it. She had tried to repair it herself, but to no avail... it just wouldn't work properly.

I took a look and within an instant I could see the problem... "Well no wonder it's not working," I said to her: "you've gone and added a bead from a pearl necklace!"
