The journey from there to here
Well, of course, the big news right now is Iraq's soccer team making it to the Olympic quarterfinals.

I have decided that, even if it DOES help Bush in November, I want this team to win.

We are fortunate as Americans in not knowing what it is like to live in a war torn country. When the casualties of war roll in, they come in on C-130's, from another place, not from next door. When our children walk outside, we don't have to worry about them getting blown up by unexploded ordinance or a land mine. They can BE children.

The people in Iraq have not had such a privilege in many, many years.

The success of the Iraqi soccer team is one small step towards normalcy, one miniscule move towards the day when Iraqi children can run across the street and trade cards of their favorite footballers and not have to worry about being cut down in the street. It is just a small glimpse of a dream that wasn't available to many of them until recently.

And it is a dream that every child in every country in the world should be able to possess.

More than that, this is what the Olympics are truly about, solidarity, and for 2 short weeks, forgetting about killing one another.

Iraq, we salute you!

signing off,

Gideon MacLeish

Yep, I hope they keep doing well and get a medal. Though with Argentina and Italy in their way it will be tough. I wrote an article about the political implications of this years olympics on my blog. The Iraq story will help Bush while the basketball debacle will probably help Kerry.

Yeah, I don't want to see Bush win, but that won't influence my pulling for Iraq.

Iraq Shmaq... who gives a crap about the political outcome... as I wrote in my blog, it was just an awe inspiring sight to see those Iraqi's marching proudly around the stadium... the cheer they received was also pretty special... It's abit of a shame though... you could hear a pin drop when the Iranian or Saudi Arabian athletes were introduced...

Does Bush seriously have political advert campaigns during to the Olympics? man... that is cheap...

BAM!!!

American politicians will usually use anything they can to their advantage to win.

Well, it's gotta be easier for the team, now that Kudai (hussein's kid) isn't beating the crap out of them daily for making mistakes, or throwing them in jail....that always throws a wrench in the training program.

Uday. [edit: Or Qusay. Wait, was that the joke? *sigh*]

And, yeah, that'd probably shit on your morale pretty well. I guess they resond better to "carrot" than to "stick"?

Sounds like most "real" soldiers too.
How about more cowbell?

Yes, they actually get to be treated like human beings.

In addition, if they medal, THEY will get the medals, not the Iraqi government.

Pretty decent incentive, huh?
