The journey from there to here

OK, I'm kind of going to hit two related sports stories in one today, both basically headlines.

The first story I want to bring up is the ignoble defeat of Mike Tyson. I have to say, I kind of had a hunch on this one, reading the stats and disliking Tyson as I do (a convicted rapist as celebrity? Nice touch there, people). It's just too bad thaat, at 10-1, I didn't have the money to drop at the local sports book. We certainly would have been able to tide over our brief money woes. Anyway, he's down, and here's hoping this means we'll see less of him.

The second story is the rather surprising tidbit that Randy Johnson will finish this year, at least, in an Arizona Diamondbacks uniform. The D'Backs have given him precious little run support, and his 10-9 record is hardly indicative of the quality of his starts. It would be interesting to know the backstory on this: did the potential teams just not have enough to offer for RJ, or did the D'Backs realize that, with the exodus of Randy, they would lose their virtual guarantee of a sold out crowd every five games? Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

signing off,

Heads Up, Gideon,

Mike Tyson is beyond pathetic. He seems to be traveling down the same, sad road that Sonny Liston followed. I don't have an answer to his problems, but I do hope that he's one day able to find peace and stability in his existence.

The Dodgers just made a flurry of dumb trades in the apparent assumption that they were going to get Randy. It didn't happen. Bye-bye NL West title! Buh-bye wild card! Good thing I'm an Angel fan!

An excellent article, Gideon. As Always, Anne Alogy

Yes, I agree on Tyson. I have been appalled for years over the fact that, not only do people continue to accept him, he has remained a big card. Thankfully, last Friday's fight should change that. I also hope he's able to find peace and stability, and I think a public that has pandered to him has been his biggest barrier to that end.
