The journey from there to here

Every once in awhile, I will get a comment about how I attack the left more often than the right. This apparently comes from the confusion with one dimensional political charts that define everyone as left, right, or center. Because I am not Democrat or Republican, I must be centrist.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I have said many times before that I am neither fair nor balanced. The truth is, I'm a reformed leftist. As in HARDCORE leftist. I was a firm believer in the nanny state until the nanny state turned and bit me on the rear. Once I saw the potential dangers, I became one of the nanny state's most ardent opponents.

But more to the point, I actually resent the implication that my articles must be weighted, with equal amounts of criticism towards either side, in order for me to not be Democrat or Republican. I am not paid to blog; if I were, I might give greater attention to the "blog editors" who want my blog to be some sort of open forum with equal respect for both sides. You want objective analysis of a political issue? Send a large donatiion to my PayPal account, and we'll talk. Until then, zip it. My blog, my rules!

I try to provide a fairly open forum; in fact, I hope to repeat my 2004 trend of profiling all of the third party platforms on my blog. It was interesting, educational, and provided stimulating conversation (if there are any Green Party members out there, I invite you to defend your platform in the comments when the time comes). I want a good conversation with thoughtful discussion. I'm just not going to go out of my way to provide "balance".

I've found that the people who accuse people of being one sided are usually just mad because your side isn't the one side they acknowledge.

I agree with you, personal blogs are just that... our personal views.  If someone can change your mind on an issue simply by accusing you of being one sided, you probably weren't very firm in that particular view in the first place.

Bring on the discussions about third parties. I'm kind of disappointed that none of them seem interested in filling the gaping voids left by both major parties this year. There hasn't been a more fertile field for the other parties in my lifetime, but they seem to be sitting this one out.

The LP national convention is not until May, and, while I can't tell you why the Green and Constitution parties are sitting things out, I CAN tell you why the LP hasn't pushed hard...yet (from an insider's view).

Two words: Ron Paul. As long as he is in the GOP race, the party will remain silent. There's a lot of discussion within the party, with factions pulling for Paul and other factions who don't feel they should EVER support one of the "big two" parties. If Paul pulls off the unthinkable and wins the GOP nomination (he's got a lof of folks on the ground in NH, so let's wait until Tuesday and see how effective the hard campaigners can be!), then the LP will nominate a paper candidate for President. If Paul does not win, he will almost certainly be offered the candidacy (although he's said he WON'T run as an indie or LP candidate, stranger things have happened!), and action won't be taken until he declines.

Of the LP candidates (I won't list them yet...more as events progress), only two have solicited my support personally, one via email, the other via snail mail. I will give them due consideration, but have made it clear if Paul wins that I will campaign primarily for him.

I have been accused of not being balanced as well.  But then I do not put out the impression I am.  I am not a republican (although I do have more in common with some of them) or democrat.

I dont agree with you on all things, and do find you unreasonable on some things - because I disagree with you and you are as firm in your belief as I am in mine.  Unreasonable may have a bad taint to it, but it is not bad if it is a conviction formed on a thoughtful analysis.

In light of recent events, that's a pretty ironic comment there. Heh, and so's the title of this article when you stop and think about it.
