The journey from there to here

One of the pitfalls of IT is that the demand is strong enough, a lot of people get hired out before they get their degrees, then never go back and finish. I'm trying to avoid that.

But I got a clipping yesterday I can't ignore entirely. It is an IT position, and I am almost the perfect candidate. My only shortcoming is that it requires an Associates degree, and I am 3 months short. But since I can make it work with my schedule, I will at least discuss the position with these guys. After all, I will have my Associates before I complete my probationary period, which makes it a low risk.

One of the keys to the job, however, is how much they support my continuing ed. The path ahead, for me, is clear: get my Bachelors, head on to law school. I'm not going to sacrifice that goal for a couple of bucks. This job would mean $3 an hour extra, but it would also require a small move. Again, probably just for the short term.

So I'm going to send in the resume. It can't hurt to at least take a shot at this one.

Back when I was laid off the first time, the out placement guy said "dont close a door before you at least look through it".

If you dont apply, you have no chance. If you do, you will not be any worse off than you are now.

Good Luck.

Gideon,

I don't know if you have looked into it or not, but the Government (now everyone don't start with the evil Gov. stuff) has some great IT positions open, and usally haves some new ones opening all the time. I check them about once a week to see what I can recommend to my students. Great benefits and retirement programs. At least worth lookin ginto, and some of them look to be very very interesting places and jobs.

There are 2561 IT jobs osted today.

Shadow,

Thanks for the link. I'll keep them in mind.

For the short term, gotta keep my eye on the prize, though. Anything that pulls me off track needs to beput aside. Hopefully I can find a job that helps me toward the goal, though.

I'll give it a look see.

Good luck Gideon! I hope they offer you the job even if you don't end up taking it.

I've been meaning to mention to you that our area is in the serious running for a Airforce CyberSpace Command Center. 13,000 white collar IT jobs! We've been trying to hire an entry level tech for months and I have seen know nothings to former IT directors and I can tell you without a doubt that we don't have 500 qualified workers here.

While it's still not a confirmed, Louisiana is actually doing all of the right things to attract this center to our area.

That's excellent advice for sure.

I hope it all works out for the best either way.
