The journey from there to here
Getting in Touch With the Past
Published on September 1, 2007 By Gideon MacLeish In Blogging

I've had a running thought for awhile, and I thought it might be a good idea to put it out there.

Most bloggers have at least some desire for online social networking. To meet people and establish relationships. Over the past ten years, I personally have been a part of numerous online communities, and I am betting that experience is not unique to me.

I would like to start a message board at some point where people who have lost touch with various online personas can reconnect with their old "friends". I'm sure there would be a market for that, I just don't have the time to get such a project going.

Over my time online, while I've had sub-personas, I have basically had two personas: Rambler and Gideon MacLeish. The MacLeish persona is the current one, so I won't bother there. But for many years on aol (yes, I know! But I had my reasons!) the rambler persona persisted. I began on AOL 3.0 as WbRambler1, and progressed to WisconsinRambler when AOL began allowing 16 characters. I then changed to a number of variations on the Rambler theme, and tried a few spinoff screen names in my day. I doubt there are many people looking for rambler, but if they are, well, here I am.

How about all of you? Any online personas you would like to share?

I too started with AOL for reasons beyond me now... ;~D

Back then I was TP72085 (Ted Pam and our Anniversary Date... guess whos idea THAT was. ;~D)

I hung around mostly on an Art Bell fan site called "The Grassy Knoll".  I started just to provide some excape from the rigors of paramedic/search and rescue school... but those people really helped me through a lot.  I do miss some of them.

I take it by "persona" you just mean other names we've used?

Wow...tons of them. Many times I'll find a name I've been using is taken, and so I have to invent a new one.

Lessee.

Milo, Spyder, Vanderbeck, Roarkk, Minguin, SteveCB, Phaedrus, and of course, Ock. There are probably more, but that's a long enough list.

Rhett2b or me. I was just me back in the days when the internet was still the domain of geeks and text.

Well some of you may remember me as DJBandit. I use to love the Smokey and the Bandit movies a lot and I love music so it sounded nice to me. I then tried to take a more serious approach when I came to JU so I changed it to my name Charles. Who knows, maybe I'll switch back someday just for fun.

I can honestly say that I have been "singrdave" since I started online. I was enrolling for AOL and a singing buddy from college suggested that I become "singer dave"... but at the time AOL only allowed for 9 characters. So no space, no "e" in "singer". I have also been Davey-doo or Doofus, but those screen names tend to be taken. So "singrdave" I stay.
And the rest was history.
