The journey from there to here

OK, here's the setup. I was going to get my haircut. Because my time's usually short and today was no exception, I decided to see what the hair salon at WalMart could do. I'm familiar with their setup. They don't take reservations, you walk in, sign up, and they get you whenever they feel like it. But it was fairly early, so I figured I'd take my chances.

I went in to the hair salon, which was open, looked around, nobody. Through a couple mirrored reflections, I could see a lady in the very back, folding the little smocks they put around you. She saw me briefly, but turned her attention away, as if deliberately trying to ignore me. I leaned in and got her attention.

Yes, she said, they would be cutting hair. But I would have to sign up (there was nobody there) and come back about 2:30 pm (two hours later). I looked at the signup sheet and saw two names on, one scheduled for 1 and the other for 1:30. So I asked her how long their appointments were, hoping I could get moved up a little. She responded with a terse, "I SAID 2:30!", and came towards the front.

The pen they had supplied wasn't working for me, so I pulled one out of my pocket. I signed up, then went to pocket it again. She looked at me like I was trying to carry off their register. Fine. It's not worth arguing about a ten cent pen. I left it with her. She then went to use the faulty pen, to prove it worked. Yes, lady. This was all a diabolical ploy to steal a pen.

I still couldn't get my haircut until 2:30, but thanks to this woman's rudeness and complete lack of a professional attitude, it was done at a salon where they actually WANT customers.

LOL.

I go through that crap everytime anyone in my house needs a haircut.

At SuperCuts they do a good job but it's $15 (x2 boys + tip = $35). We have to wait forever because they have weird rules about appointments (they say they don't take them, but I see people come in with appointments, so whatever). They also let all the Hawaiians go ahead of us no matter when we or they arrive.

At the PX barber shop they do a crappy job and barely speak English, but it's only $7 per kid (plus tip). You take a number and they are pretty fast since it's 99% military hair cuts, but any uniformed Soldier who comes in gets to go ahead of civilians. Which is as it should be I guess, but the day Adrian left for Iraq he went in in his civies and waited for an hour because of people coming in. He just didn't want to spend his whole last day wearing his uniform.

Annnnnyways. Sorry to ramble.

Glad you got your haircut. Sorry the lady was a cow.

Not that it will really make a difference, but I'd take your write-up of your experience, perhaps clean it up just a little, and send a copy into Wal-Mart's customer service area and let them do some attitude adjustin' in that establishment.  Even if nothing happens, at least there is the thought that some heads there would roll to make improvements in the customer service area.

On the haircut side I'm finding I dread getting my haircut lately as no matter where I go the cutters seem to think I need a comb-over and they wind up leaving odd lenghts of hair that fall back down and just look incredibly stupid.

Though my crown shows thinning hair, I'm not in need of that comb-over and I just wish that the cutters would cut my hair to a uniform length.  Even going to the local barber (not salon, plain old barber shop) gives me wierd results and has me irritated at having to go get a cut.

I guess I could change to a different style and stop parting my hair on the side, but it just seemed so wrong for a middle aged guy to be walking around with the old part it in the middle floppy style I had been using for so long.

Walmart leases the beauty salon space. And in my experience, as long as there is positive cash flow, WalMart does not CARE what the customer thinks (as I found out with my TLE nightmares).

There are some things money can't buy, even a haircut at a Wal-mart salon. LOL.

I am a simply guy who likes simply, easy and fast products and service. When it comes to haircuts I found out that military style suits me just fine; it easy, fast and I don't have to comb my hair till it grows again. For this I bought my own clippers and have my wife cut it for me. My kids are small and they like the look as well, so until they decide to be picky and want either interesting looking hair dues, colorful ones, long hair, or simply a bit more independence, my pocket will be safe from these haircutting monsters .

My wife, on the other hand, does not look good in a military style cut. But it's easier for her and many other women to deal with hair dues. There are so many Hispanic salons around here where she gets in and out and the only time she takes is when they are doing something other than cutting her hair such as styling it, drying it, coloring it, doing her nails and her eyebrows or they are simply talking too much.

I went to the Wal-Mart salon a couple times, I had a long wait but only because others were there with only one cutter, and the other time I got right in. No big deal. Would go there again, too. Supercuts I like as well, they do it quick and easy, no big deal.

Of course, there's a Supercuts right near the Wal-Mart, so they have to have customer service in order to make any money.

Hahaha...Gid...I only need one guess!

Charles: Can you wife do fades? If so, I am impressed. I have tried but CANNOT do it.

You'd be surprised what one can learn when money disappears like Houdini.

My money doesn't disappear, it just presto-change-o's into receipts...

I don't know, sometimes even with the receipts it just doesn't add up.
on Aug 20, 2007
That's because you don't keep THOSE receipts.

Or maybe it's because I'm too afraid to see the truth.

It doesn't make a difference. I did it several years ago, they haven't changed! The staff is different but it's the same attitude and same crappy people! I hate going there for my son so now we go to Hair Cuttery over in Waterford Lakes and THEY are always nice and friendly! We could go to a barber but they wash his hair at the Cuttery, for an additional charge but worth the comfort for his sake! The only thing is they always try to sucker you into buying their products!LOL!
