The journey from there to here

This week in our free time, my friends and I have been sorting through our haul from last Saturday's auction. Things were off to a good start when a high number of items had a good resale listing price on half.com. Even better on Sunday when our first sale came through. Followed by another on Monday. Then three today. In three days' time, we have nearly doubled what we spent at auction (although gas must be accounted for), from the sale of five books. Five books, it must be noted, out of TWELVE BOXES of books. And out of four truckloads of stuff.

Oh, we know we're going to have to dump some of our haul. There are a few white elephants in the lot (and white paper towel dispensers...anyone want a paper towel dispenser?). But when you're operating in the black after three days with maybe one percent of your inventory sold, I'd say that says something.

The funny thing about the books was that everyone passed on them. I was able to buy them at the minimum bid. Because I knew what they were wnd what they were worth. Now I just have to spend a lot of time packaging and shipping. But it's kind of nice to have a little side cash flow coming in again.

hey that's really cool! I love half.com I buy and sell on there all the time. What books were they? I'm just curious.

The majority of the better ones were nursing books, but there were a wide variety of textbooks, including sociology, college algebra, physics, phys ed, US History, Texas Govt, and several computer books. It was mainly the nursing and US History books that had the best listing prices, but the computer books can be bundled and sold as lots, and the general ed type books can be sold as lots as well. The nice thing about it is, once you turn a profit, you're not worrying about MAKING money, you're simply trying to add to it.

I love half.com as well. Loved it better when I lived closer to Madison, Wisconsin, and got all the college textbooks I could dream of at insanely low prices.

Way to go on the diamond in the rough!  Can you post a link to your books?  I may want to peruse some of them.

Good job. I used to make a little extra cash on auction re-sales but that was back in the days before eBay. I can see one making a kiling now using eBay to resell items.

I once picked up a cast iron pot belly stove at an auction for $25 and sold it $5,000. It was a Franklin.

Good on ya, Gid. Extra $$$ is always welcome at my house, too. When I was stationed in Monterey I used to pick up Pebble Beach and assorted golf paraphernalia at garage sales or even actual price and then resell them on eBay -- and I always turned a profit. Nice extra cash, could use some these days. Maybe I should start yard saling again.
