The journey from there to here

I'm a history buff. A MASSIVE one at that. This is a major part of the reason I try to get involved with projects like the Woody Guthrie Center in Pampa, TX.

And so I was surfing around looking for some artifacts the other day, when I came across an eBay find. The New York Times from April 15, 1935, the day after Black Sunday, one of the most notorious dust storms of the Dust Bowl. The paper has a great article on the subject, and is an important piece of history to Pampa, and to the center, as it was a major subject of Woody's writings.

Fortunately, it attracted no other bids while it was up for sale. In about two weeks, we'll have a nice addition (along with the Arlo poster and LP that I received as a donation). I also have a few other nice finds related to Woody Guthrie and the Dust Bowl. But the NY Times from the following day has by far the most historical significance. I'm looking forward to adding these pieces to our collection.

The story, as well, is a well written, interesting story...and for one who likes source history, it's a fun read (I've seen snapshots of it, even though I won't hold the original in my hand for a couple weeks). Seeing the original story has already given me some inspiration.

History is a living thing. Sometimes I am just amazed when I go to a museum to think about the hands that made this item, used this item, and it's still here. Incredible. The problem is that I want to take them home with me. I don't think I will become a museum thief but I definately have covetous thoughts. How lucky you are to actually be able to hold this in your hands even if it is just temporary.

Living in Va, you are almost living in history.  The state adopted history as its official state activity!

Great find, BTW.
