The journey from there to here
Well, we got through another round of storms unscathed. In fact, it really wasn't a major lasting storm, not as bad, at least, as last week's snowstorm (final tally -- 9 inches. I tagged a photo out in the work parking lot when just a couple inches had fallen). We got home and I told my neighbor I could tell it hardly rained here. Heck, only HALF the road's surface was gone...a good gullywasher'll take out the whole thing!

I love thunderstorms from one perspective. But, truthfully, from a tech support position, it kinda sucks. If a lightning strike took out your router because you didn't have the foresight to buy a decent surge protector, umm, I don't know what to tell you.

I made precious little progress on my Speech paper due Monday (speaking of which, for those who missed it, I passed my English Comp CLEP test, meaning I don't have to take English Comp. I must say I'm slightly enthused at that). I have a decent draft together, it's just not long enough. I may post it when it's done, AFTER apprising my instructor of this development, as I don't want to be accused of plagiarism. It's actually a pretty cool topic...dissecting the interpersonal relationship issues from the movie "Benny and Joon".

Thanks to Zoomba's comments, you shouldn't be seeing many more runon posts like the couple that have made it through. I'm pretty sure he's right about it being a FF glitch, as this problem doesn't replicate itself at work, where I use Maxthon as my default, or at school, where I use (GAH!) IE7 (don't laugh...it's all about the best browser to play 9Dragons, dammit!). Don't know why this glitch shows up on my computer and not Mason's, but it is what it is.

With the school year coming to a close, I'll get to play with Linux a little more. May experiment with a few different distros on throwaway machines. Also, I have hopes of getting to work on putting the TRS-80 CoCo machine together...if anyone has a lead on either a 5 1/4 inch external floppy drive or a joystick, I am looking for both. I intend to use the former to house my liquid cooling system, and the latter I intend to convert into an optical mouse. I'm also seeking a good motherboard for an HP laptop I inherited (it could possibly be serviceable by soldering the power jack, but I want to see if I can find a replacement first). This sounds like a job for eBay.

We had practice interviews this week as a class project, and I'm happy to say I did well. Not surprised, but it is always nice to get affirmations on situations like this.

Cheers to Netflix's "Watch it Now" plan. I hadn't planned on getting a Netflix membership, but this plan was enticing enough that I flat out decided to get the $23.99 plan. 4 DVD's at a time, and 24 hours of livestream. I am SOOOO looking forward to getting the Muppets Season 1 DVD and introducing my children to the joys of watching cloth puppets with Jim Henson's hand shoved up their arses (ok, let's not get technical here, I know they operated differently...it's still funny, so LAUGH).

I hadn't meant this to turn into such a ramble but it did. Meanwhile, I'm mulling over a piece I may put into the writing section. So look for it (hint: it's not the piece I already submitted at this writing). I might take this moment to point out that we did ask for that forum, we might wanna start putting it to use (and, yes, I know, I'm as guilty as the next guy!) We have some definite writing talent on JU, we need to get on there and encourage them, otherwise the next incarnation of Fred Harteis bloggers may knock the good articles out.

Well, I'm probably going to hit the hay soon. But first, I need to conquer the world on RoN.

Congrats on the CLEP test (always good to get to avoid wasting time in a classroom), and 'grats also on the sign up for Netflix.  Hopefully you'll enjoy that an awful lot.  It is a great bargain for the entertainment budget.

*tip: as long as you are sticking primarily with older titles, you should be able to maximize the comings and goings of titles in your Netflix que.  As those old titles cost money to warehouse and such, and are less popular than "new releases" Netflix tends to be generous in shipping those out.   The new releases and more popular requests tend to get rationed out and you can find your account gets "throttled" back to keep you from getting too many things too quickly (running up shipping costs and becoming an unprofitable customer for Netflix).
As you point out though with that "watch it now" feature (which is primarily only available for older titles) you can definitely get your money's worth out of Netflix as you can catch that much more to see while things are going back and forth in the mail.

Those Muppet shows were the best!  They had something for kids, but were at a level even adults could enjoy!
