As I perused the "Current Events" section of the forums, I noticed a proliferation of Imus articles. It made me think.
When I started blogging, if it was current events, I nailed it. I didn't let a lot of headlines pass me by. But the truth is, I've been more than a little perturbed by the nature of the news lately. I am finding the Onion FAR more insightful and thought provoking than the New York Times. While that has pretty much always been the case, NOW I'm finding them more accurate as well.
So, what have we had over the past few months? Anna Nicole and Imus. Oh, yeah, and a preview of the Hillary vs. Obama race (not gonna touch that one with a comment; depending on what comment I made I will be regarded as a racist or a sexist, so I'm just not going there). As for Anna Nicole, I was not touching and will not touch that. I was hardly a fan of Ms. Smith, but she was a person, and to dance on her grave and disrespect her is just wrong on so many levels. Can't bring myself to do it.
In the interim, of course, the biggest non story of 2007 came about: the dropping of the Duke rape case. Now, I'm of a more "liberal" persuasion than many in this regard. I tend to side with the accuser more often than not. But even to a cynic like myself, this story stunk from the beginning. It is one of the first times I can remember completely doubting the accusations from the beginning. I am hoping the players launch a few hefty civil suits. It should take a LOT of lap dances for that young woman to get to a positive net worth.
As for Don Imus, I didn't like the outcome, but I knew it was coming. Making a comment perceived as racist (it wasn't; as others observed, it was SEXIST in nature, but was really just a bad joke gone horribly wrong) is pretty much the automatic death sentence in broadcasting. Not gonna cry any tears for Imus, though...he's made a mint being an asshole and I'm certain that his severance pay should console him for a couple of days.
I want to get back on comments, but first I need a story. These aren't showing up in abundance, but when they come, I'll try to be on them. Meanwhile, I'll just keep reading my tabloids...I mean, local newspapers.
