The journey from there to here

A few weeks ago, the question was asked about our guilty music pleasures. I said I didn't have any, and honestly couldn't think of any at the moment.

but thanks to the joy of YouTube, I have been reminded of one such pleasure a few of you might think silly.

As a rule, I am not an ABBA fan. "Dancing Queen" does nothing for me. But two of their songs get excepted from the list: "Waterloo" and "Fernando".

ABBA were, of course, relics from the disco era. And Waterloo certainly belongs in the disco category. But Fernando is definitely not a typical disco song. It is a folk song that got misplaced, and certainly the crossover of folk-rock into pop in that era makes it well placed. Indeed, the very intro to the song is reminiscent of the Simon and Garfunkel classic "El Condor Pasa".

So, call me silly, but those two seventies classics have to be noted on my guilty pleasures list.

I don't know that I really thought too much about Abba until I watched Muriel's Wedding. It's one of my favorite movies and it has an Abba heavy soundtrack. Muriel stops listening to Abba when her life gets better. Her life is as good as Dancing Queeen. It's a great movie if you've never seen it.

My guilty pleasure songs Cruising by Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis from the movie Duets. Backstreet Boys - I can't admit to my friends but I do like some of their songs. Lots of 80's dance songs that really don't stand the test of time but I still love them, think two of hearts by Stacey Q, Lost in Emotion by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Crush on You by the Jets, Girlfriend by Pebbles, Looking for a New Love - Jodi Watley, Nasty Boys by Janet (Miss Jackson if you're Nasty) and even Paula Abdul - Do you love me?

All my pleasures are guilty ones, but I'll only confess to this one...

Now, the Backdoor boys are SERIOUSLY something you want to keep hidden...lol! At least ABBA played their own instruments.

I KNEW you people were lying when you said you didn't have any guilty pleasure music!

Oh, and I love the movie Duets. So cheesy, but so good.

No, anyone that knows me knows not to be surprised by ANYTHING they find on my playlist...ABBA included. So it's not really secret, although some people would find it embarrassing.

I feel the same way about my select choices of Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond. Say what you will, but "I made it through the rain" is classic.

By the way, if you have never listened to "Fernando", I recommend it. It is one of those songs that is true poetry set to music. While I would have never made the "El Condor Pasa" connection in my younger years, it seems so obvious listening now (to the intro).

'bout time for me to try embedding:

It won't do it. It shows up right in the preview, but not in the finished posts.

I haven't been able to embed anything in replies... only in articles.

I like ABBA, and dont mind saying so. SO it would not be a guilty pleasure.  But Fernando is my favorite of theirs.
