The journey from there to here

It all makes sense to me now!

For those who know me, I am a HUGE Douglas Adams fan, have been for many many years. So I was pontificating and I have decided the world will end on October 10, 2010.

Bonus points to anyone who can make the connection as to how and why I came to that conclusion. I'll tell ya after I get a fair sampling of guesses

Ok, here's a hint for those of you who must have spoilers. DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY STUMPED!

seriously...only read this if you're stumped

I'm not kidding, folks

I MEAN IT!

Hint: since you were so desperate to have it: put the date in the standard (mm/dd/yy) format.

Binary?

I place DA on the highest pedestal there is, but I'm so far removed from reading THGTTG that I can't remember why October 10 is significant. On the upside, you've inspired me to go read the books and revisit the man responsible for making me want to be a writer.

Ouija board?!

Philomedy is on the right track...

keep chasin'...you're almost there!

101010=Binary for 42=The answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

YES!

I'm such a nerd.

On an interesting side note, 101010 is ASCII code for asterisk, which is a search wildcard. Hence, if you are searching for *, you are searching for everything.

Perhaps the world will not end, just some monumental discovery will be made.

Very Good, Philomedy. You get a cookie!

Did you do it without the hint or did you use the hint? (be honest, now!)

The asterisk information is very cool as well. I didn't know that was the ASCII code for asterisk. Somehow I think that was probably done on purpose! LOL!

I will admit to requiring the hint. As I said, I haven't read the books in nearly 2 years. I knew it was connected to 42 somehow, but I didn't make the connection to binary until I read the hint and numerized the date.

My backup idea was that October 10, 2010 was the date the dolphins left.

Except for where you're wrong, Gid. The world is gonna end when the zombie uprising occurs.

In 2046.

On March 31st.

At 2:03 pm.

(All right, what am I referencing? Really, really big amounts of geek points for whoever can get this.)
on Mar 22, 2007
Gid, I got the date thing right away.

SC... I was going to say Buffy first... but then you said serious geek points so now I'm wondering if you are talking about STNG First Contact. That's about as geeky as I get... well okay. Not so. But as geeky as I can at the moment

LOL. My 9 year old is an *expert* on zombie uprising survival (he read a really cool book about it; I can't remember the name of it now), which makes him an excellent conversationalist when it comes to speaking with, proper, uptight adults. Hahahaha.

"What did he say?"

"Um, he said 'use your head, cut off theirs'...nice weather we're having, huh"

Kudos to Philo.

Re: ASCII - for us old war horses, we had to memorize the codes like signalmen did Morse code.

I would have wondered why you were talking about an asterisk tho.

Not sci-fi geeky as much as internet geeky . . . but nice guess!

And Buffy would be most appropriate. I've just picked up the first issue of Buffy Season Eight (the comic that's the continuation of the television series) and I'm hooked all over again.

Damn that Joss Whedon.

2010 is a little too early for me. Please.

Gid,

I love it. Thanks for the laugh.
