The journey from there to here
Published on March 2, 2007 By Gideon MacLeish In Current Events

In all of my years, I have never been called to jury duty. So I was somewhat surprised to see my first ever jury duty notification in the mail today.

I don't know why I've dodged it so far, but it was past time for me to get the call for jury duty. I mean, I've been an adult, a registered voter, for over 18 years. So now, on March 12, 2007, I will show up in district court and present myself for jury duty.

And promptly attempt to have myself dismissed (I'm a FT college student, so I may have an exemption).

Don't get dismissed.  Stay and be on the jury to help decide the fate of some of your neighbors.  (... and get great gossip and other insider information to use against some of them )

That oughta do it. but one thing cool about being on jury duty -your employer HAS to pay you while you're there. Of course that sucks if you're self employed.

Maybe in Texas, but in Virginia, they are not required.  And the state will only pay you $5/day.

Florida's jury duty pay stinks too. I think it's something like $15/day.

I received a summons a while back. I sent in the form to be excused on two grounds. Firstly, I'm a long haul trucker and it would be a major problem to be home at a specific time, and secondly I don't own a car and would have no way to get to Tampa to appear.

I never heard back so I guess they accepted it.

I received a summons in Clark County, Nevada, MONTHS after we had moved to Minnesota, so we had to send them a ridiculous amount of verification that we weren't citizens of Las Vegas any longer. They didnt' accept my first verification so I had to send more. Like I was going to go 2000 miles to serve jury duty. Pffffft.

I've always wanted to do it though...just to see what it was like...
