The journey from there to here
Sometimes God DOES Close a Door to Open a Window

I have to admit, I'm not much up on American Idol. I enjoy watching the YouTube replays of the "flops" even more than I like watching the real thing. And I rarely watch the Oscars (until Robert Loggia wins, I'm BOYCOTTING! LOL). But I have to admit the story of Jennifer Hudson is beyond compelling.

Had she won American Idol, would she have gotten this chance? Not likely. Studios pretty jealously guard their contracts, and if she were the "American Idol", odds are pretty good she'd have been stuck in a schmaltzy pop role. I mean, while most people can actually name most of the winners, very few of them have moved far beyond the pop world. Now, Jennifer Hudson is Jennifer Hudson, Oscar winning actress. And that's something bigger than just winning Simon Cowell's acclaim.

But credit HAS to be given to the show, because, had she not been a contestant, she might not have gotten the attention of Hollywood. Kind of a nice story, doncha think?

Heheehe, I love it! I just did a blog about it too! I'm very happy for her and you're right, had she been THE American Idol, she wouldn't have gotten where she is now! I think it's just fantastic!

I think it's fabulous. I just wish I had seen Dreamgirls while it was in the theater. I missed it.

You're point is well made though. I am sure Jennifer Hudson was crushed when she was eliminated from Idol. Who ever would have thought that she would end up where she did?

American Idol really is quite the phenomenon.

I was hoping she'd drop a thanks to American Idol for helping her on her way, and a bigger thanks to Simon Cowell (a bigger slightly sarcastic thanks) for helping to inspire her.

Regardless, I was glad to see her win.  I think she earned the win, and am glad to see her do well in her career.

Several other (non-winning) Idol Finalists have had a lot of success too, and I've been glad to see that too.  Most of the "winners" -- with the exception of Kelly Clarkson in the pop world, and Carrie Underwood in the country world -- have had fairly forgettable careers so far.  They've produced a few records, sold a few of them too, but generally made hardly a peep when compared to some of their competitors.

As an example, check out Clay Aiken's continued popularity, Josh Gracin's record sales as a country artist, Kimberly Locke and a few others.  Not to mention Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice, and a few more.  These folks don't seem to have needed to win Idol to prove themselves to be winners or stars.
