The journey from there to here

Between work and school, I have more online time than I have ever had. And because of the time I spend online, I have discovered a few things.

The one that disturbs me the most is one that has potential for serious tragedy in our small community.

See, I cruise MySpace every once in awhile. Though I loathe the site in general, too many of my friends are on it for me to ignore it completely. What concerns me, though, is that I routinely come across 13 or 14 year olds whose profiles list them as being 18.

Now, I'm sure I know why they registered that way. Because MySpace is trying to crack down on its reputation as a shopping place for pedophiles. But because they're listed as 18, they are potentially getting into things that they are not ready for. A world where some of the people viewing their sites may be less than honorable.

Yes, I know that teenagers have always done some things that haven't always been right. Yes, I know that rebellion is pretty much a timeless trait. But past generations haven't had to contend with their young teenagers being exposed to such a wide audience of people who would taken advantage of them. They may have sowed their wild oats, but it wasn't in front of an audience of millions, where their chances of meeting a pervert are exponentially increased.

It's very easy to fall into the "It's not MY child" syndrome. But from the pages I have seen, and some of the things I have seen written ON them, it just MAY be your child. I doubt most of these childrens' parents are remotely aware of what's on these sites, or the danger they pose.

And I hope, and pray they do not find out the hard way.

Hey Gid.  Do you have the net at your house now?  I was wondering about the unusual (for you) timed posts...thought maybe JU was wonky and posting them later or something.  Is it in home now?

As for the article, I am guilty of being "all out there" when writing on JU.  Heck, people from my past (because I use real names) have found me from my blog.  I worry about kids today not knowing how really small the world is.....

No, usually at these times I'm posting from work.

Ok, sorry. I'm a bit behind the loop.

Sad that I work for an ISp and don't have home Internet, I know. But you have to realize I live in a rural area, and there's no stinking way I'm mounting an antenna in the middle of January.

I was pretty proud of Dharma and her "I Snoop" article. I don't think enough parents do that. And I don't really consider that "snooping".

I have a MySpace account mainly because lots of my college friends and my friends from high school have them, and it's just another way to keep in contact with them. Occasionally if there's a musician I like I'll add them to my friends, but that's about it. I keep everything clean on my MySpace account. And I'm glad.

Because last week I had about 5 of Ryan's students approach me and tell me that they had been looking on MySpace and had seen our picture on there. I have our engagement picture posted as my profile picture. I'm sure they read my blog and such over there (which is mainly about volunteering at the shelter, or memories and such...it's not nearly what I keep here at JU). I also have several pictures posted on MySpace as well, and I'm glad they're all decent, too. You just never know...

I keep it clean because that's who I am. I don't have any skeletons in my closet and my husband doesn't take any raunchy pictures of me or anything (at least not that I know of. I don't think the pictures of me asleep with my mouth hanging open count). No one wants to see a fat, naked chick. ANd I know that parents don't keep an eye on what their kids are doing online. And I know parents surf and it's only a matter of time before they see what *I'M* doing online. So I better keep it on the up and up, eh ?

I think you really do have to keep an eye out on your kid if you know they are gonna put something up like this online. As much as you don't want to, sometimes you do gotta be a snoop just to make sure they are being safe on there.

I have family who keep trying to coax me into getting a Space on there, but I have been hesitant to because I do not want a student (or former student, since some are teens now) of mine coming across it.

If I do decide to put one up, I'm gonna make sure, like Marcie said, to keep it as clean as possible.
