The journey from there to here
Published on January 8, 2007 By Gideon MacLeish In Current Events

The move to make a folk hero out of Saddam Hussein has begun in earnest. And it's almost certain to divide the left, as most rational, reasonable liberals want nothing to do with the movement.

But that doesn't change the fact that there are still those among the liberal camp who are making a hero out of a mass murderer. But they're not using the direct approach, but rather the indirect approach of demanding that those who would refuse Hussein all of the creature comforts of an innocent man are morally equivalent to Hussein.

The conclusions one must draw from their strange rationale are simple: either those who speak their mind should be executed, or what Hussein did is really not that bad. Since I doubt they would really like to see me sent to the gallows for free speech, I can only assume that their moral equivalency is meant to say that Saddam's actions were mere human nature, and that we should not punish him for acting in a manner that is only human. Basically, exonerating Saddam for his sins by demanding that they are simply normal human behaviour.

In another article, I pointed out Nazis who were sentenced and hanged at Nuremberg who had families. Nobody wept for them. Nobody wrote long, passionate articles, nor violated copyright by posting those articles in their entirety without the consent of the publisher asking us to feel for their families, to be outraged because their families weren't allowed to communicate with them as if they were free individuals. Nobody did it because what the Nazis did was indefensible. And what Hussein did was indefensible. And because their families' love for their family member did not trump the need for these people to serve the sentence for which they were convicted.

Saddam Hussein died alone. Saddam Hussein died without calls from friends and family members offering him words of comfort. Saddam Hussein died without his teddy bear to hug, or the loving embrace of his children. And that is how it should have been.

I am insulted that anyone would demand that my lack of compassion for Saddam Hussein is even close to morally equivalent to the murder of millions. I find especially telling the hypocrisy of this particular individual, who demanded that Saddam's execution was "justice" to my insistence it was not, and then had the gall to post the ignorant claptrap from a Hussein family apologist and demand that I was as bad as Hussein for not buying it.

The more I have discovered, the more I actually think Hussein's daughter SHOULD have been able to say goodbye to him, though. IN PERSON. While they were fitting the noose for HER neck, too.

The thread was closed because you were using it to flame
Silent Poet.

I did not FLAME Silent Poet, Jennifer. I offered quite a few constructive points, actually.

But then again, in your little world, the only people who are valid are those who agree with YOU.

So because you did not flame him I should leave it open and let the abusers continue on my thread?

Ever hear of a BLACKLIST? You could very easily have blacklisted the ones you felt weren't behaving themselves on your blog.

You ran and hid because we roasted your ass like a Christmas goose.

you are quite wrong Gideon, i proceeded to the blog - and tried to close the thread off intending to close it for a couple of days so the attacks on Lucas would stop, at which time I would have re-opened the thread, however......the feature did not work to lock the thread on the forums....hence I have made it private and I will unblock it when this ridiculous flame war is at an end....that includes LW taking advantage of the fact that you and Baker are having a go.....

I do not run from an argument....I will stand by my convictions and I have stated it clearly - I stand by my conviction that the daughter should have been give a chance to say goodbye to her father over the phone - that is my opinion, it is your opinion she should not.

As for Blacklisting - everytime i black list a culprit it results in a flamewar! so i do not black list anymore, I delete the comments involved.

Oh, nice, you censor instead of blacklist. Now that I know that, I will probably respond on your threads much less. I don't mind being blacklisted, but being censored is another matter.

you cannot please everyone Gid - if you cannot cope with the fact that if you come onto my thread and start trying to flame and insult and swear me down - you will be deleted - then by all means DO NOT comment at all..........that is your choice ... I will not use the black list feature BECAUSE when I do it starts a flame war - belittling me.

Your comments while heated and even insulting were not deleted were they?

LW WAS DELETED - 5 comments or some such number - all insulting and as usual disgusting. San Chonino was deleted for being totally trolling.

I SPECIFICALLY asked that they DO NOT comment on the thread as the feature was not working and they continued to abuse my thread without my permission and I must just STFU and take it -come on DELETE!

LW is blacklisted on Trudy's thread - yet in the forums she can comment - so must Trudy just let the insults sit on her thread? LW knows she is blacklisted yet she still goes and comments with insults KNOWING the feature is not working in the forums - come on DELETE

I don't know how the forum glitch is working, honestly, and, as for the feud between LW and Trudy, well, I don't dislike Trudy, but I don't find her articles compelling enough to draw my attention, so I haven't really seen a lot of it, to be honest.

Just a suggestion, but if someone engages in random idiocy, I usually don't delete...their comments stand as a monument to their stupidity, and that's usually enough.

one comment yes - but when you get two people that have joined in with the sole intent of misbehaving on the thread - it gets out of control - I now delete them - if I catch them in time.

sometimes it can happen over night - and too many comments happen - as did with Lucas - so I shut the thread instead...there are too many valid bits among the insults to be deleted.

LW has just imploded - hahahah 7 threads - she is flaming me on 7 threads hahahah how sad! implode city! - now i will just sit back and watch the show hahaha!

J1: You deleted that article because you hadn't bothered to educate yourself about Hussein's daughter. You found yourself playing advocate for a wanted fugitive funding the people killing your countrymen. ANyone would have deleted such an article, especially once they found that by posting the whole thing they were in violation of copyright and the terms of use of JU.

But... if you feel you must, blame us for it. If it makes you feel better, if you think you in some way save face, fine. I'll accept responsibility for your stupid, cut-and-paste blog. It was all my fault...
