The journey from there to here

As I'm working on the TRS-80 case mod, I'm still a bit away from doing the build I want. I have a couple of questions for any veterans that might be patronizing this board.

First up is the mini-ITX. I like the possibilities it presents, but the lack of upgradeability, as well as the limited options it presents as far as PCI slots, SATA headers, etc, kind of turns me off. I'm believing I can wedge a microATX in there once I make some standouts and take out a few internal components that get in the way of what I'm trying to do. From what I've heard, I should be much happier with the microATX...and with a processor that's not integrated, as well.

Now, where the questions come in. I need a power supply that's less than 5" wide. Less than 3" wide would be better, but I can fit the whole thing in if we're under 5". And it can't be more than 3" high. I know that some desktop power supplies fill the bill on this one, but they're difficult to find on my "normal" channels. Does anyone know where I could find specs for a power supply that would be a better fit for my case? I've seen a Dell desktop that's pretty small, so I'm 90% sure that what I need is out there. The rule IS "form over function", but, like any toy, I do want some performance out of this thing.

Next up: keyboards. I have a couple of good candidates, but I want something that doesn't horribly clash with the retro look. It would be terrific if they made a retro keyboard that has the "look" of a coco keyboard, but if they make it, I haven't found it. While I have some good candidates, nothing's "perfect" enough to be set in stone.

Fortunately, I can't say the same for the cooling system. I'm pretty much sold on liquid cooling because of the limited space, but I'd like to hear a few of others' experiences with liquid cooling. How it performs, words of caution, anything you can think of.

This is a new project for me. A lot of it's new territory. Any pointers you can give me in these areas would be appreciated.

I would look into tthe power supplys used in LAN-party boxes. I can't link you right now since everything here is websensed out but the entire box is very tiny and the power supplys are correspondingly small.

Thanks. I'm sure my buddy google can help me on that score...I just have to know WHAT to google...lol! Xoxide had a couple of possibles, but I need to look over several options before I know where to go.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a site yet that lists the dimensions.

I've installed PSU's into those Shuttle boxes on 3 occasions. My local parts dealer carries a generic PSU meant for them. I've never actually measured one before but I know they're small (thin and narrow) and can be found in as much as 350 watt outputs. The generic one that I usually get is called a Shuttle PC40 Silent X SFF XPC PSU.

Again, it might not be exactly the dimensions you require, but because they are thin and narrow you still might be able to make them work in your system.

UBob,

From looking at that, it appears to be a very nice option. The problem with the desktop PSU's (specifically the Dells) is the wattage...no way I'm putting a 160W power supplu in any machine I build! The specs on that shuttle PSU are much better...and it's SATA ready...another very important feature as SATA cables take up less space than ribbon cables.

If I can conserve space on the power supply (and from the looks of it I can), I can go with a bigger mobo! I've got 14 inches width on my case...so with this I could hypothetically use an ATX (although I'm going with microATX...it will provide what I need).

Thanks for the recommend. It's always better to get a recommendation, since you would know a little more about performance, etc.

Keep an eye out for the case mod articles. I already have the first one up. The second one, showing the guts of the machine, will be up as soon as I can get the pics to display properly.
