The journey from there to here

I love steak. Steak is very, very tasty.

But I also have to face the fact that it's very, very bad for me. While other folks may be able to process steak (lucky devils) without serious damage to their health, I cannot. So I am having to write off steak as yet another unhealthy relationship which I would be best of being rid of. And I must do so knowing that in not doing my part to eat steak, I am contributing to global warming. I am the enemy.

Fortunately, I don't mind vegetables. I could easily live on an all fruit and vegetable diet, and, in fact, have before. But while I went back to meat then, my blood pressure wasn't climbing into the stratosphere (something that's influenced, no doubt, as much by variables outside my control as by those within my control, but hey, we change the things we CAN control and accept the things we can't, right), and so going back to meat wasn't as much of a concern. Right now I need to concentrate on getting my BP back where it needs to be (it's gone in the right direction the last couple of days; THERE'S the good news), and roast, fried, baked, or broiled cow parts just don't figure into the picture.

Unfortunately, the Texas panhandle is not exactly a mecca for healthy fare, so I'm prolly gonna have to mail order some of my favorites (believe it or not, I've HAD tofurkey and I kinda like it). But, my famous curry can be made as easily with tofu as it can with chicken, and I can eat veggie wraps 3 times a day (to save money, I bought everything I usually put on my subs at Subway...with a few favorable modifications...avocados, anyone?), so I should be alright. But I'll miss the cow.

Dunno how you eat it, but once I started eating meat rare/medium rare, it stopped hurting me. Once meat is cooked well done it is like shoe leather. It isn't digestible for me, anyway.

I have two modes of meat eating. Either cooked for hours until it is falling apart, or at the very least pink in the middle. The more pink, the less it bothers me.

YOur BP, and my Cholesterol!  I have had to give up cows too.  As they say "if it tastes good, you cant eat it".  Paper anyone?

I have tried to give up red meat several times but I always end up eating it again. There's nothing like a good hamburger. I may try to limit it to once a week.

and here I was just getting ready to order some Omaha Steaks for my hubby. I've heard how yummy they were, but in the past, too cost prohibative. However, this year I have absolutely no idea what to get him so steak could be his best ever gift since he's such a steak and potato guy.

I, on the other hand could probably live at Subway myself and would be quite content with their Veggie Delight.

I need to eat more cows to get my iron up!

I've never understood the eating of meat rare....and I'm not trying to be insultive. Where I'm from meat has to be well cooked.

Curry is really good for you Gid. Try a dash of Cayenne Pepper and also garlic with everything.

Exercise helps too. Even if it's walking for 15 mins at first. I dont' do it too often right now, and I'm going to start full force again after the holidays, but I know the little I used to do helped with my not having high BP or cholesterol or anything like that. Good luck with what you plan on doing.

Meat cooked well done lingers in your stomach for like 24 hours, and passes through your innards like hunks of steel wool. Rare meat isn't so dehydrated and fibrous. It digests nicely.

I have a fun little walking program FS if you're interested. It's an 8 week program and makes it interesting.
