The journey from there to here
Subtitled: the Liberal's Lament
Published on August 31, 2006 By Gideon MacLeish In Humor

(With apologies to Janis):

"Oh George, woncha buy me a Mercedes Benz

The rich all drive Porsches, I must make amends

I bummed all I can off my family and friends

So, George woncha buy me a Mercedes Benz"

"Oh, George woncha buy me an HDTV

This ol' Sanyo set just ain't doin' it for me,

If the picture were clearer I think I'd be free

So, George, woncha buy me an HDTV?"

"Oh, George, woncha buy me my next whiskey round

My life is so rotten, my sorrows I must drown

And I'd make it with a government sponsored night on the town

So, George, woncha buy me my next whiskey round?"

Excellent parody Gid!

A perfect description of people who want the "safety net" to be a hammock

Dr. Guy:

Yeah, the parody writing team of Gideon/ParaTed2k would be a lot of fun!! ;~D

We don't want perfection, just competence; we don't want handouts, we just want you to not pull the ladder out from under us when we're trying to climb up it. Is a fair and just society really that much to ask for? We think it's the least we can do. You'd think the conservative Christians would understand that, given Jesus's admonition, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me."

And with your photo editing skills, we could make an awesome video to go with!

You'd think the conservative Christians would understand that, given Jesus's admonition, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me."

You'd think that LIBERALS would understand that Christ gave that admonition to PEOPLE, not to secular governments. What have YOU done to improve the lot of the poor, Sean?

Fairness isn't Fair and Equality is never Equal!

Quit expecting others to make things "Fair" and "Equal", since the only way that can happen is to give the government enough power to force it to happen.

Is it "fair" that I'm disabled and can no longer do the jobs I love, while people who hate their jobs get to keep theirs? NO.... but you know what, that's life. We play the card WE are dealt, not the hand we wish the government would give us.

I came from the "wrong side of the tracks", Sean, and I can tell you, it isn't "the man" that is destroying the poor in America, it is THEMSELVES. I can attest to the hard knocks you get for trying to be studious, of the virtual shunning that results when you aspire to be a "pencil pusher" or a "desk jockey". I can tell you of countless lives ruined by drugs, alcohol, and crime, of countless bright individuals with a promising future who don't get to realize that future because they've taken up residence in the local cemetary.

It is the responsibility of the poor to clean up their communities, to stop making excuses, to drive the criminals out. It is the responsibility of the poor to PATRONIZE businesses in their own neighborhoods, instead of crying when they relocate across town because of high crime and lack of customers. It is the responsibility of the poor to raise their children to work hard, to respect others, and to possess a values system that will enable them to succeed. Until we address the core problems that keep the poor in their state, no amount of assistance from ANYONE will help.

I owe EVERYTHING I have and am to people who never allowed me to make excuses, who never let me underrealize my potential. While we don't have a lot, we've always moved in a positive direction, despite setbacks that would have left some others crying in the ruins of their shattered lives.

Is a fair and just society really that much to ask for?

I dislike how often this question arises, as it pretends there is no cost to doing this. If it were really that obvious and simple, don't you think it would have already naturally come about?

I could say "Is immortality really that much to ask for?" and be on the same line, as either is an unkown quantity. It could be one month of research that makes it as simple as turning on a light switch. Or it could be impossible, and bleed our resources dry trying to chase it.

As ParaTed2k mentions fairness is an impossibility, as it is far too subjective a measure. Someone could, in fact, consider his disability "fair".

If by a just society, you refer to one in which justice is maintained, i.e. those that are responsible for injuries sustained are held accountable, then I doubt you'll get much in the way of argument. This however, is again a subjective point. For some, the only appropriate justice for a shoplifter would be rapid hand amputation, i.e. chopped off with an axe. Other people may expect only some form of community service, and probably all colors in between.

So a fair society is too much to ask for, and a just society may not be too much to ask for, but don't be surprised if it isn't what you wanted, and if it is, chances are that it will change.
