The journey from there to here

When infamous receiver Terrell Owens made the jump from Philly to Dalls, sportswriters counted on him giving Dallas one stellar year, then becoming poison. He did it in San Francisco, he did it in Philly, he'd be almost certain to do it in the "Big D". One thing they hadn't counted on though: Terrell Owens has climbed to such undeserved stellar heights that he no longer needs to "prove himself" for a year before infecting the team with his wretched attitude.

He showed up to camp, and has put in more hours on the bike than Lance Armstrong in all of his Tour de France wins combined. While the other players have been struggling to prove themselves in the hot Texas sun, T.O. has shown all the work ethic of a hobo. He simply expects to suit up on opening day and begin adding to his career stats.

But there's more to it than that, I believe. It appears that T.O. is attempting to send the message to Bill Parcells that HE, not Parcells, runs the Cowboys. And he's done a pretty good job of it to. In every preseason practice, T.O.'s absence has taken top billing over the development of other players. Writers are hanging on every word T.O. says and watching the blood rise in Bill Parcell's cheeks like mercury in a thermometer on an August day in Death valley. T.O. is the story, and none of the remaining players on the team matter.

But Parcells has the means to regain the reins. The question is whether he has the will. All he needs to do is call T.O. into his office and tell him that, out of concern for T.O.'s tender hamstring, he will not start the season opener against Jacksonville. Or any other game, for that matter until T.O. can prove that he is fully recovered. He can and should appeal to T.O.'s ego by demanding that T.O. is far too valuable a player to put out on the field with questions about his health and viability. And then Bill Parcells should start in Owens' place the receivers who've worked day in and day out to be a part of the team. The receivers who've EARNED their jerseys.

T.O. probably won't get the message, even then. But he knows that adulation is never reserved for players who languish on the pine. And he may at least show up for practice and give the team back to Bill Parcells. And then Dallas can look for some other sucker to take in T.O., one that can provide several separate lockers for T.O.'s ego.

Scuttlebutt was that the Raiders were ready to pick him up. can you imagine a team with Randy Moss and TO on it? Art Shell would have quit!

I'm sick of the media's fascination with him. You say he controls the Cowboys, hell I think he controls the media. In the media's quest to make it all into tabloid headlines it has made T.O's already huge ego even bigger. I wish all sports fans would just boycott ESPN Sportscenter and all print media for a week.

I'm not saying T.O isn't too be blame, too. He is a cancer to any team. A person starve for attention. How can a player so talented still be so insecure? There is no way I would want him on my team. But I will say this I don't think his is faking any injury. I honestly think his hamstring is hurting. On the field on game day he DOES come to play. Randy Moss ( a player I like more ) takes plays off all the time.

---T.O. probably won't get the message, even then.---

He will never get the message. He still feels he never did anything wrong anyplace, and if he did he had a justified reason.

---But he knows that adulation is never reserved for players who languish on the pine.---

If he doesn't play in the 1st game it will be only because he is hurt, not from not practicing enough. Unfortunately in the salary cap era of the NFL when you are paying a player a huge contract they will get to play. Cedric Benson of the Bears, who missed a voluntary workout, was made the starting RB only because he has a big salary. His attitude is of most prima donna players of this age, he thinks he deserves everything because after all he's Cedric Benson. In a pre-season game he left the game early and went in the locker room. After players complained about it, he promptly missed the next practice unexcused. Will he be riding the pine like he deserves? No, he will be playing. Teams don't want millions of dollars on the bench. The Bears should have never have drafted him. It's not like he all of a sudden developed his me-first attitude overnight. All the signs were there. I have no sympathy for the Bears, and especially the Cowboys with T.O.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of T.O., the media's actions are disgusting. You can practically see them drooling as they hope and pray for the 'T.O. meltdown'.
Their intent to start trouble is obvious in their questions to both Parcells and Owens.

I watched the game on ESPN against New Orleans and one announcer felt compelled to remind the viewers many, many times during the course of the game that T.O. was not there. I'm thinking 'Ok, we get it, now can you comment on the players that are here and what is actually happening on the field?'

You are right in saying the sportswriters are 'counting' on him becoming poison, only it's a bit more like obsessing.
