The journey from there to here
No, this is not the title of the world's shortest book!

As I was reading a pice on the recent SCOTUS decision by Bahu (I can never spell his last name right, so I won't even try), I was inclined to reflect on what it is I like about certain liberal bloggers. Bahu falls into that category of a blogger who will challenge the argument rather than the opponent in a discussion, and while we have found ourselves on opposite sides of many discussions, there's never an anger or bitterness in it...because the argument never degenerated into personal attacks. And the fact that we have different views makes our conversations stronger.

Bahu fits into a pattern that is matched by liberal bloggers I like. He's not a "one trick pony" his topics are varied and insightful, even as they are at times infuriating. There's substance to his writing that cannot be overlooked.

But he's hardly alone. While it is true that liberal bloggers on JoeUser are in the minority, they are hardly extinct. Even though he doesn't blog nearly enough, stevendedalus' work is often equally challenging and insightful. The same can be said for Kingbee, who managed to disagree almost entirely with a recent article of mine, dissect and categorically challenge it--and do so without one single personal attack coming into play. The fact that he does this so consistently makes him a favorite of mine, left or right. And then there is cactoblasta, who approaches things from the Aussie perspective, and does so in a friendly, engaging manner. Almost all of these bloggers have something else in common...they can respond to the more acerbic conservative bloggers in a way that elicits a congenial response as well.

If you're liberal, and a blogger, there is a way to approach the presentation of dissenting views. And if more liberal bloggers would learn it, I'm inclined to believe the discussion on here might broaden somewhat in scope.

Excellent article, and I agree 100%.

I agree with your top 2 100%.  Bahu (and I am chickening out like you) is 100% opposed to me, yet he is good and insightful.  Stevendedalus is the most dangerous liberal as he does make a lot of sense as well.  ThatoneguyinSLC is another I cross swords with and respect.

Kingbee could be in that group.  But more often than not, he throws out opinion as fact and when challenged on it, does not return.  But although he does drop into the personal on occassion, he for the most part stays above it.

Davad70 is different as well.  He tries to turn the argument to his terms.  Rarely debating the issue on topic, but instead going the "says you" and "you too" route.  If he debated the issue presented, he could be good.  But that seems to be the exception, not the rule.

I actually find the Aussie liberals (by American definition please) to be some of the best debaters and although they really dont care about American Politics, they do argue a great arguement.

where is kingbee these days? I haven't seen him much.

Come back, bee. Us libs need your help!

Kingbee usually posts really early in the morning, I think. I think JU has had some problems, because the last couple of times I tried to post really early in the morning/really late at night it has been slow or even unreachable. If he's just been looking in at that time of day, that might explain his absence.

Honestly, though, I would understand it at this point if he and other Libs wandered away. There's not much support for them here, with an obvious nod to this article as an exception.

Good article and a good demonstration of community spirit.

Thanks for writing it.

I'll just keep my opinion of Bahu to myself on this one. Other than to agree with you that he is an intelligent person. Kingbee is great! We don't agree politically, but I can see us having a good time if we ever met. Stevendedalus makes great points and is usually a good read... Great article!

I think kingbee's probably one of the brightest guys I've read. I've never once seen him fail to go the distance to research his arguments even if it means going through senate documents or patiently trying to cope with someone who demands evidence that black isn't white. He's definitely one of my favourites on this site.

Just going to give a +1 to most of what was written in the original article. I have similar opinions about most of the bloggers listed there in. While I don't agree with them on many fronts, I enjoy and appreciate their arguments and their methods.

Far and away (and leaps and bounds) over the tired crap that would come from some former frequent JoeUsers (dabe ring a bell?) who couldn't avoid name calling and profanity (and useless arguments) if you told them their favorite liberal program depended upon their behavior in the discussion.

No Cacto.  You are.  And thank you for that.

I thank you Gid, I really do. Your words mean a lot to me. I was happy, really happy that Baker agrees too. We often find ourselves sparring on a few issues, but I have always found both of you putting across your points of view in an highly educated and informative manner. Thanks.

But I am not a LIBERAL at all. In fact I am what you would describe as a slightly right wing civil libertarian, but on Iraq I have a point of view that comes off as liberal. My views have to a large extent been shaped by my discipline, History. I have read von Hayek and Popper and so perhaps that puts me in the category of liberal.
