The journey from there to here

I used to be a "causehead", giving to absolutely every cause I could afford to. I still try to be generous, but I'm more selective with my money as time goes by.

One cause I don't intend to give another penny to until/unless they change their marketing techniques, is breast cancer. The reason? Because the marketing in breast cancer is predominantly sexist in nature. Probably one person out of 100 actually knows that men can get breast cancer as well, and that 460 men a year die from it (Link ). While the numbers are admittedly substantially lower than among women, about 40,000 of whom will die from breast cancer in the same year, they are nonetheless there,  something that doesn't show up in a single ad by those raising funds for breast cancer in a single ad I have seen. In fact, they've identified the color pink with their cause, and heavily begun marketing their campaign around Mother's Day (The Texas Rangers, at least, participated in a promotion where their players used pink bats on Mother's Day to promote the cause), basically identifying it as a women's disease. If I were a betting man, I would almost be willing to bet that a man going in for a breast cancer screening would be looked at with the same curious stares as if he had requested a hysterectomy.

The worst thing about the 460 male deaths per year from breast cancer is that most men probably didn't even know they had it. Breast cancer has a VERY high survival rate if it is identified and treated early, and it's a fair bet that a significant number of those deaths could have been prevented by simply including men in the information and education about breast cancer.

So, it's time to wake up, folks. Stop promoting breast cancer as a "females" only disease, and start recognizing that there are men out there right now who have it and need treatment but will never get it because you have neglected to mention that breast cancer can, and does, affect them as well. Otherwise, you won't see a penny of my money, not even for Yoplait yogurt!
