The journey from there to here

In a follow up to his Central Park "art display" that attracted nightly ridicule on "David Letterman", self described "artist" Christo and his wife intend to wrap the Arkansas River in Canon City, Colorado.

As an avid hiker and conservationist, to say I am appalled would be an understatement. I think we've so trivialized the word "art" as to make it almost meaningless, but more to the point, what Christo is proposing is essentially tampering with the ultimate art, that of the Great Outdoors. I personally don't want to walk along the river to have my view of all the wonders of nature spoiled by some artist's conception of how he could make it better. And while I do believe art is subjective (an opinion reinforced every time I'm forced to view a Kandinsky), it should take some effort on the part of the artist to create in order to be defined as such. Christo's proposed project takes no such effort; all it takes is an expense account at the local fabric store.

Anyone who thinks they can improve on the beauty of nature is crazy. There is no piece of art that rivals natures beauty, and it sounds like they will clutter it up.

The thing that makes art so amazing is the fact we can think, "Wow. Someone's mind conceived it, then their talent produced it. And they are human just like me!"

To me art is almost like hope....it shows me the "chance" I could do something that fabulous.

But to think they can improve on something created by God....that is laughable....even when I go into the many caverns around here...the underside of the artwork, it is breath taking.

I liken it to the underside of my cross stitching...while my underside is a messy tangle of strings I don't plan anyone will see...Nature's underside is as beautiful as the rest of it...just more simplistic.

I agree with you Gideon.  What mother nature can do, seemingly at random, is awesome!
