The journey from there to here

"The Da Vinci Code" pulled in $77 million over the weekend, an impressive take, by all estimates. With "Over the Hedge" pulling in $37 million, and "Mission: Impossible III" taking in $11 million, it's been one of the better grossing weeks for the US box office in quite awhile. While DVC's controversy's not likely to die soon, by selling tickets, it is helping an industry that has been underperforming recently. While we've seen hype over movies such as last year's "Brokeback Mountain", DVC came close to exceeding last year's movie of infamy's total domestic box office take in a single weekend.

There is little doubt that Hollywood's writers, producers, and actors are thrilled with this release, as it seemingly erases questions about whether the big screen is obsolete. Unless the movie's ticket sales die quickly, it could well find itself perched among the top ten movies of all time, a shot in the arm the movie industry desperately needs right now.

But I'm still not going to see it.

The hype helped pull in the numbers.  If it sustains it, then it can be judged a block buster.  But if it dies, then the reviews were right.  It is a sub par movie.  Right now, even my son does not want to see it, so I will pass as well.

I'm not gonna see it because I want to see Xmen...and Pirates of the Caribbean.hahahah. Much better fare for my movie pallet.

What Hollywood needs to do is stop producing crap. Now I know that one guys crap is another guy's desert, but it seems that the movie industry has been producing a long string of Grade-A crap the last year or so. Add to that the fact that the cost of going to a movie has continued to rise and it is no wonder why attendence is down.
I think DVC did well because of A-list names (Ron Howard, Tom Hanks), a very popular book, and huge amount of controvery and hype. I don't think it shows a paradigm shift in Hollywood by any means.

I'll probably see DVC, definitely see XMen, and Pirates... as soon as my home equity loan comes through.

definitely see XMen, and Pirates...

That makes it unanimous.  I think those 2 are going to be real blockbusters.  As for DVC - I will wiat for HBO to get it.
