The journey from there to here

An interesting bit of news came across my desk the other day. Seems there is an independent who has filed to be considered on the ballot in my race. Because he filed as an independent, though, he needs to gather 500 signatures to get on the November ballot (harder than it seems--those 500 cannot have voted in either of the primaries or in a third party convention, such as Libertarian).

He filed under the impression he was the only other candidate on the ballot. I called him and spoke with him. He has some pretty good ideas, and is willing to back my campaign if he does not get the required signatures. Because he is in another county, this will be of tremendous use to me.

If he gets on the ballot, I intend to email him my campaign itinerary so we can stage a few debated. Two candidates are ALWAYS a bigger news story than one, and there's always the possibility we can draw out the incumbent and get him on stage to debate.

Either way, I intend to give him information about the party. His principles are fairly consistent with LP philosophy, and perhaps if we can encourage him to run for a different office in '08, we can extend the party's influence. One of my goals in this campaign is also to organize the party in four of the 19 counties within my district, and he's a good candidate for expanding into that county.

See previous article comment.  I dont think the signatures should be qualified either.  But I can see abuse on that part.

But that requirement is like saying we can only nominate one person.  I dont like that part either.

The Kinky Freidman for Governor campaign had to explain the rules on not voting in the primary to allow your signature to be valid on the ballot registration campaign.
Interesting that you and he both feel the need to begin non-traditional campaigns.
If he does not get the required signatures, I hope he is still committed to changing the political landscape in your area, since his help could do a lot for your campaign.
Good luck!

Gid you are too good to be a politician and a bit too smart. I hope all of this works out well for you.

I think in your place I would have thought he was running to draw votes away from me. Is there any reason that the main parties would benefit from you and this guy splitting the protest vote? Does he seem like he really wants the job?

Yes, but Kinky and Strayhorn aren't getting signatures from the Panhandle. We're a rural area, and the 500 signatures will be pretty difficult (although not impossible) to obtain, as the nearly 80,000 registered voters in this district are spread out across 19 counties.

Baker,

No, he just was unaware of my campaign. As I explained before, you need to file by January 2, so he couldn't have filed in response to my filing, as I filed my Campaign Treasurer Appointment AFTER that date, and that's when your campaign gets serious notice. He actually doesn't seem like he wants the job very badly, and expressed interest in helping with my campaign if he didn't get the required signatures. He filed because the incumbent in this race has run completely unopposed for 8 of his 9 terms.
