The journey from there to here

Warning: this is just another rant. If it's not to your liking, you may want to move on...lol.

I recently put up an article that was a bit more of a piece of "me" than some of my regular pieces. It sunk like a stone.

It seems to me fascinating that there are numerous blogs that are posted on the way JoeUser is going downhill, and yet, the articles that get the points aren't the insightful, well written articles. They're the "shock blog" articles with the inflammatory titles (Two such "articles" that I know of have topped 230 responses, last I checked!).

I have seen other bloggers make this same statement in different ways; when I arrived here, one very talented blogger was frustrated to the point of nearly leaving. This is one of the reasons I started and continue the "A Blogger You All Want to Know" series; because if you want to get rid of the crap on the site, the answer is simple: READ GOOD BLOGS! I stand by all of the users I have profiled, and if you want a starting point for good blogs, check them out! (I would also like to state that higher ranked users are also usually very good reads; though this is not necessarily the case; the reason I don't profile them is they already HAVE the exposure).

To the topic line: This causes me to reflect on why I truly blog. It's not for points, but some comments, some feedback are nice. It may be a small ego boost, but it tells me what you really want to read (sadly, my top article remains the Mary Kate Olsen post).

signing off,

Gideon MacLeish

Gideon: I just wanted to let you know (in case you didn't already) that I enjoy your posts tremendously. You find interesting things to blog about and your writing is always fun to read and thought-provoking.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Rock on, Gideon!

BTW - I must have missed the popular Mary-Kate blog . . . should I take a peek?

Keep up the good posts. I'll keep reading. I'll make an effort to give more feedback, too!

...if you want...it was one of my first blogs, and because of the popularity of the subject matter, easily my top referred article.

I read everything you write, Gideon.  I don't always comment....but I do read.  In the future I'll leave you a '.' to let you know I was there!

I have become a regular visitor of your blog too, Gideon.

Thanks, all of you. I do appreciate the responses. It lets me know I'm on the right track.

I don't try to be a "point whore" (if I did, this site has a whole lotta tutorials), but it is very easy to gravitate towards "popular" topics.

Gideon, I understand completely where you are coming from. I reflected on the very fact that many of my blogs either go unnoticed or get very few comments a while ago. To be quite frank I found that I was having a hard time with that for a while. I had to take a step back and think about who I was really writing for. And to be entirely honest, there truly are times I am writing hoping for comments. I suppose if I really and sincerely just wanted to write for myself I would do just that, write in an actual journal, not on a blog where others can read and comment. Oh well. But I have read many of your articles and enjoy reading them very much. I suppose you just keep at it and enjoy the experience as a whole.

Yeah, I still lurk a lot more than I post too. I have tried to be a bit more talkative recently.

Sometimes I don't comment for fear that others will get tired of hearing me yap my trap all the time. I agree though, I appreciate getting comments. I like to know that others read my stuff, and it's fun to know what they think about it.

I know, mig...as a side note, the "sunk" blog did eventually pick up a couple comments

Yes, those are frustrating. I'd like to have an article with 200+ comments, but that would seem to require a lot of arguing, and I'm not going to go there. The one fairly heated thread I had going I decided had said everything it needed to and was just getting unnecessarily out of hand so I closed it. While I'm tempted to write a shock blog as an experiment, I know I wouldn't let it get out of hand anyway so there's no point.

Exactly, Gene.

What gets my goat is I could easily muster such an article and keep the fires going by tossing in inflammatory comments now and then, but my integrity would go right along with it.

Hey, I had an article with the word "boob" in the title, and it still didn't get much play.
