Those who do not learn from history...WHAT?
Published on March 29, 2008 By Gideon MacLeish In US Domestic

It was about a year ago when the next President of the United States was crowned. With the crumbling economy, skyrocketing gasoline costs, and a war dragging on, Hillary Clinton could not lose.

But a funny thing happened on the way to her coronation. And that funny thing just may sink the entire party in the November elections.

I am among those who believe that much of the Obama vote is essentially an "Anyone But HER" vote, which may well mean that he lacks the momentum to pull off the election in November. And Hillary has some of the strongest anti-candidate sentiment than any serious candidate in recent memory.

As the Democratic race seems all but certain to be headed towards a showdown at the convention, the Republicans can rest at ease. While the Republican Party still faces a daunting task in bringing the party faithful behoind McCain and dealing with an economy that, for many Americans, is worse than any they've ever known, they also enjoy the luxury of not needing to spend another dime on primaries. Meaning that they get to start collecting for the big race while the Dems will remain in the trenches for months.

In the beginning of 1992, the Republicans' victory seemed so certain that SNL had a parody sketch of the DNC primaries that it called "the race to avoid being beat by Bush". That was the year Ross Perot divided the vote, and with his help, Clinton came to power. This year, it is the Democratic race that should be certain, with Ralph Nader (the environmental candidate...can't forget that) playing the role of spoiler. But in an odd twist, Clinton and Obama are playing spoilers to each other, dividing the party to a level that seems reminiscent of historical elections such as 1860. Whether they can turn that around between now and November remaiuns to be seen.

But of all these things, one thing is certain, and that is that the Presidential race is far from decided. And unless the Dems pull together at some point, they are likely to find themselves watching from the audience on Inauguration Day,

I tend to agree with your conclusion about Obama. MOst of his supporters cannot even name anything he has done or stands for - outside of 30 second sound bites. But then that is fine with me. ABH is as good a reason to support a candidate as any of the ones still in the race have given me.
