The journey from there to here

I don't put my poetry out much, but this one I think you'll like. It's a song lyric, really, and it works with the tune I have in mind. It's a rough draft, but the basic idea's there (and the chorus is done):

Superman Sleeps with Winnie-the-Pooh

Superman in his caped pajamas
Is running through our hall
He can leap over tall buildings
Though he’s only two feet tall

When the night is late
He falls asleep in my hands
He’s not afraid of the big T. Rex
But he’s afraid of the boogeyman

CH:

Superman battled a dinosaur in our living room
And he drove away the monsters with our kitchen broom
Now his eyes are getting heavy
As I turn out the light
Superman sleeps with Winnie the Pooh and sleep’s his kryptonite

A thousand bad man’s bullets
Can do Superman no harm
Yet the sting of a bumble bee
Drives him into my arms

He can lift a freight train
Over his little head
Yet when the night gets late
I have to carry him off to bed

(CH)

As I look at my little boy,
I know there’ll be a day
When he becomes a young man
And puts Superman away

And when I look back to this time
As I know I’ll often do
I’ll always remember my Superman
Holding Winnie-the-Pooh

Thanks for the nice imagery. As a father of four myself, it's great to keep some perspective on my kids growing up and moving past their childhood phases.

Very good.  Thanks for sharing it.

Awww... I can see my sons now.

Great lyrics, liked 'em. But who is Tim Justice?

Dude! These are great, you gotta get this recorded!

Btw, I don't know what tune you have in mind, but as I was scanning the meter, "Take this Job and Shove It" started buzzin' around in my head. Try it and see if it don't work, with very little convolution of the lyrics, lol!

Thanks. I may play with it just a little bit and see what gives. I have a different arrangement in mind, but I may look up the tablature and see if the chords don't work in a slightly altered arrangement.

Now I know who to write-in November '08...

Good luck with your singing career.

Wow.  This is really good.  I'd love to hear the music you have in mind for it.  (Maybe a video?)

The only thing I'd change is the use of the word "our" in the chorus.  It's used twice in a row.  Maybe "THE" kitchen broom?

Of course with music it may be dead on the way it is...but just reading it, that stood out (to me).

But certainly not enough to detract from the cozy picture you painted.

You should post more.....I am actually starting to like poetry more since reading the authors here on JU.

I'm actually not much of a poet. I don't write poetry very much, as most of what poetry I DO write is intensely personal, and I have zero tolerance for criticism of something so personal (which is also why it will likely never be published in my lifetime).

Oh, ok. I hope you don't think I was criticizing.....

I think all good song writers are poets Gid. (But that's me.) I mean think about it...how many full length poems do you actually know by heart?

Now how many "good" songs do you know by heart?

In the end, it isn't the ones that use the biggest words or have the perfect meter...it's the ones that are remembered and repeated imho.

oh, no...was just 'splainin' why you aren't likely to see many poems posted here.

Well, I have to put out a lot more'n one to be considered a "good" songwriter...lol! I have a few, though, and now that I'm getting familiar with the basic structure, I am set up my tape recorder and start setting them out.

Good. Looking forward to hearing them.

I must pursue some ever elusive sleep tonight......have a good one!

Sleep is bad for you. Stay up all night. *yawn*

Boy does this bring back memories Gid. My boys were big into the superman pj's wearing them almost everynight. I've got so many pics in my albums of them in their caped PJ's . And Winnie the Pooh was my middle son's favorite. I used to call Brian my little "pooh bear."

I've already bought my grandson a Superman Blanket.....to go with the superman pj's I'm going to get for him.

I'd love to hear this sung Gid. Maybe you could set this up for us....hmmmmm?

Working on it. I'm still in the writing process as far as the arrangement goes...I have a rough demo, but it's VERY rough at this point...WAY too much background noise!
