The journey from there to here

OK, it is now clear to me. The mantra of "reduce, reuse, and recycle" apparently no longer applies. Not only do we have Al Gore refusing to reduce his consumption, we have the following defense from one of his Al-colytes:

I could be wrong, but I dont think he is saying for us to use LESS energy, he is saying we need to change WHERE we get it from. Taking the pledge may have shown he is dedicated to both, but I think he is more interested in cleaner, renewable energy then he is in using less.

Johnny, hold the phone! So now my consumption doesn't matter? Someone tell the California legislature before they ban incandescent lights. You can use as much energy as you want as long as it is from renewable sources. Run that 52 inch TV 24/7! Turn the A/C down to 50 and wear a parka! Just make sure you purchase the carbon credits to do it.

Frankly, I am sick and tired of the left constantly changing their argument when they're cornered on it. Come on, folks, we had multimillion dollar ad campaigns telling us to reduce reuse and recycle, now the position is that it's a lie? While I'm no fan of Ralph Nader, I will say that he at least has maintained his position for 30 years and is no hypocrite.

I can't say as much for Gore and the Al-colytes!

Recycling makes sense- especially at the rate that humans are expanding.  The average new home in this area is over 2000 sq ft.  If we cover the land with landfills to hold all the garbage, how will we keep expanding at our current rate?

Anyway, I recycle what I can, and what makes sense (paper takes little to recycle, aluminum is expensive so it's worth it, etc.) I reuse whatever I can, and I conserve where I can.  If everyone just did a little, we'd have a lot less issues.  But, America is the "throw away" society.  Everything has to be new and disposable.  Spend $4 on a compact fluorescent?  Why?  Incandescents are $.50.  Who cares that the fluorescent uses less electricity and lasts 10 time as long?  We go for cheap, easy and disposable instead.

I am not a recycler. For some reason it's never been a priority for me. The military makes some recycling easy because we have bins for paper and all that.

Maybe I will start recycling. It would be good for the kids to learn. It's also a Cub Scout endorsed activity.

Here in HI we pay 5 cents per container as a fee that is returned if we recycle it. For those of us who are lazy, it's basically a tax.

It does add up, though. A 12 pack of sodas carries a 60 cent fee.

In MI, it's $.10.  So, if you don't take them back..well...you're just kinda stupid.  LOL

Ouch.

We've had problems here with availability of centers for turning them in, but still, I imagine if we always turned ours in, it would end up paying for a nice steak dinner once a year.

It is, but it isn't. I look at it this way: at such a high rate, it's virtually certain it will be picked up by someone, so even if you throw it out, you're probably donating to the poor...lol!

In MI, if you sell something with a deposit, you have to take the returns.  So, basically, all grocery stores give refunds.  People still throw out cans, though.  But, it gives the garbage pickers that the gas stations a way to pay for their next lunch, at least.

IN California it is also a nickle. But dont worry about not recycling them. The bag ladies (and men) are always digging through the trash cans to do just that.
